how do i change a oil cooler on my 2002 octavia vrs

Featured Replies

Hi can any one tell me how to change my oil cooler on my 2002 oct vrs do i take the 2 pipes of then undo the nut where the oil filter screws off

Are you aware that the oil cooler is the small square looking silver casting that the filter screws into. It is water cooled and therefore part of the cooling system. Why do you want to change it? You'll need to drain the coolant and disconnect these pipes then remove the unit from the block. If you're looking to upgrade, leave it in place and fit a sandwich adaptor plate between the oil filter and the OEM cooler then bolt on an aftermarket cooler.

Don't be put off by one mistake.

Maintaining your own car can be a satisfying and rewarding experience not to mention the money savings.

We have all made mistakes in the learning process but we usually only make them once especially if it hits us in the wallet.

Use a specialist tool for removing the filter next time and you will not have this problem again.

I got air into my ABS unit, but that has not stopped me. Last big job I did was the cambelt on my TDi, prior to that replacement shocks all round.

As Lex say "we all make mistakes" dont give up mate just do a bit of research before you tackle anything big.

The guys here have a wealth of experience and only too happy to help with advice.

Thats the one I have and it works a treat  My first oil change on the Octi could I get the bugger off.....Lost patience and like you stabbed it with a screwdriver and got drenched in oil. Since then I have invested in many tools to assist me in DIYing and with the help of this forum have grown in experience and confidence. Unless I feel it needs a ramp I will usually always try for myself first.

neither did the brakes :D

Just read this. What's with the octy oil filter? I've had plenty of cars and done oil changes on them oil. Never had a problem getting the oil filter off. With the octy though I couldn't shift it at all and had to buy this vicious looking clamp thing:

Halfords Advanced Professional Adjustable Oil Filter Remover from Halfords Price £16.99

Even then, I had to use a 70cm breaker bar with the clamp to loosen the filter!

Took hours and required a six mile walk to halfords to buy the tool (I'd already drained the old oil). Now I have the tool though it should be a 20 min job next time and I'll know what oil has been used etc which is more than you get from a garage.
