New Octavia 1.4TSi DSG

Featured Replies

A couple of questions:

Does this enigne have a turbo and supercharger ?

Does the DSG have 6 or 7 gears?

The 1.4 TSI has a turbocharger only. Some of the TSI engines previously used in the VW Golf did have both supercharger and turbocharger. The new Octavia has the same 122PS engine the Mk 6 Golf.

It's a 7 speed DSG (despite what some brochures say), again as used in the current Golf..

I've got one on order, being built next week.

The Skoda Auto brochure seems to have correct details (?). I wouldn't trust the Skoda UK brochures.

Here's the technical details from the Golf brochure.

– 1.4 litre/122 PS (01) (90 kW) petrol engine: CAXA TSI engine with homogeneous mode (Lambda 1), stratified high-pressure start, double injection catalytic converter heating, turbocharger with waste gate, air-to-liquid charge-air cooling, maintenance-free timing chain, plastic intake manifold with integrated intercooler, continuous inlet camshaft timing adjustment, grey cast iron cylinder block, steel crankshaft, duo-centric oil pump, dual-circuit cooling system. Fuel system regulated according to requirements using high-pressure fuel pump with integrated pressure limiting valve

Oh, there is a new super- and turbo- charged engine with 160PS in the Golf as well. May take a while to find its way into the Skoda I guess.
– 1.4 litre/160 PS (01) (118 kW) petrol engine: EU5 compliant four cylinder in-line engine with homogeneous mode (Lambda 1), stratifi ed high-pressure start, turbocharger with waste gate, additional mechanical supercharger, intercooler and dual-circuit cooling system. Fuel system regulated according to requirements using high pressure fuel pump with integrated pressure limiting valve. Intake manifold flap change-over omitted, regulated duo-centric oil pump, metal cartridge oil filter and three way catalytic converter

apostrophe!

Skoda UK have at long last amended their current brochure -- the 1.4 TSi DSG now shows as having the 7 speed box together with standard fit ESP & Hill Hold.

Well at least they eventually it right - congratulations. :D

While Skoda are using the 1.8TSi with 160bhp I doubt we will see them bring in the 1.4 with the same power

Thanks for the replies, good to see members of this site know the cars better than the people who are trying to sell them.

I was told by a salesman yesterday it had a supercharger and the DSG is a 6 speed!

Following my original query, Skoda UK, were quite adamant that the 1.4 TSI DSG came with a 6 speed box, there was no Hill Hold control and ESP was only available as a factory fit option only.

Even contacting Skoda Cz did not provide any definitive answer, they saying it varied from country to country.

All absolute tosh since TSi's DSG's have the 7 speed box together with standard fit Hill Hold & ESP, regardless of country.

Skoda UK have at last realised the true facts but guess it takes time to cascade this information down to dealerships and for all their staff to be aware of it.

So it's no real surprise that dealership sales people cannot get it right either!

because of the lower Co2? higher mpg? lower tax?

hi

in case you're interested, i've test driven this car recently, and have submitted a short report on another thread. The 1.4 TSI DSG really is great combination, and you have to go above £20k (RRP anyway) to get another similarly refined engine with DSG from Skoda.

i think Bassa and Mr Hugo have ordered this model, and in trying to penetrate the confusion of info from Skoda have become more reliable sopurces than the official channels!

if I recall, the VW 1.4 TSI 170 twin charger has had criticism as well as praise. I think it was not always especially refined and may have to be worked harder than the larger capacity 1.8T to get the power. It's possibly significant that VW group tends not to put the twin charger into the larger/family/exec type models where refined power delivery is seen as important eg Passat, A3, A4 and Octavia.

This is not problem for the more modest 122bhp output of the single charger 1.4 TSI.

i think there's an American expression saying something like there's no alternative to cubes (ie cubic capacity)!

Helix - have read your report. I don't know how you have driven one though as the dealer yesterday was adamant they have the only 1.4TSi of any UK dealership and it's a manual!

I think they're uncommon, but Withams of Walton on Thames have both a manual (hatch) and DSG (estate) 1.4 TSI. Both are SE spec. The dealer I dealt with is called Rob, and he is helpful.

The twin charger 1.4 TSI DSG is used in the GT version of the new Golf and has a max bhp of 160 at 5800 rpm, max torque of 240Nm at 2000rpm, max speed 137 mph, 0- 62 mph in 8 secs, 47.1 mpg combined and CO2 emissions of 139.

In comparison, the 1.8 TSI DSG single charger in the heavier Octavia L & K has a max bhp of 160 from 4500 to 6200 rpm, max torque of 250 Nm from 1500 to 4500 rpm, max speed 138mph, 0-62 mph in 7.8secs, 42.8mpg combined and CO2 emissions of 155.

So there is little to choose, the 1.8 being very slightly more frugal but with higher emissions - if the manufactures figures can be believed in the real world.

or my favourite, no replacement for displacement :)

the 1.8 uses more fuel

and the saying is there is no replacement for displacement!! :D

Hmm. Well when I ordered (18th March), there were manual 1.4TSI demonstrators at both of the dealers near me (Mitchell, Chester and Alex Lawrie, Liverpool). I drove the one at Mitchell's, it was sold the day after. Don't know if they replaced it yet, but it sounds like a bit of a stretch of the truth to suggest there is only one in the UK.

I suppose it's not surprising that our technical knowledge is better than the dealers and customer servives dept. Handing over thousands of pounds tends to focus the mind, and I wasn't going to put my name on an order form without even knowing basics like which gearbox it had.

But Skoda UK really need to do better, dealing with them was incredibly frustrating.
