Changing front speakers but confused by wiring

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Sorry if this has been answered but I didn't come across it in the search.

I'm replacing my original front speakers on my Octavia I with a coaxial set of Infinitys. Was all set to replace them this evening but was stumped by the wiring.

There's two clips connected to the original one with 2 wires in each clip. One wire is a solid brownish colour and the other is striped which is the same brownish colour (could be just badly faded red !) with a black stripe. So for starters I'm unsure which is the positive one, I'm guessing the one with the black stripe ?

Can I simply get an adaptor kit where I can connect the two clips into which will give me a positive and negative out which I can then connect to my new set ? And if I can, do I connect both + and - to the + and - on the new speakers ?

And finally, why are there two sets of wires connected to the speaker anyway ?

Cheers.

Just to add, I would like to have the possibility of putting the original ones back in at some stage so the less wire cutting the better, however if it has to be done it has to be done.

a stripe or a tracer normally denotes a negative, but with speakers it doesn't matter which way round you connect them so long as they are all the same.

when you say clips, what exactly do you mean? a picture would be handy? does your octy have seperate tweeters as well?

if it has tweeters they run the wires to one speaker, then they are paralleled off to he second one and the tweeter would have a capacator in series with the speaker to filter out LF

The + and - should be marked on the speakers or the connector. Make up some wire with spade connectors and attach one to the stock adaptor and the other to the speaker. This can be removed if you want to put the stock speakers back in.

I went to take a pic but had left my phone behind and I'm in for the night so it'll be tomorrow but I did find this pic.

The plactic clips in the pic are what's attached to the original speakers. So the wires in my car that connect to the speakers are attached to what would connect into the clips in the pic, the male if you would. So basically I have two sets of males that would go into the females in the pic above.

I assume there are tweeters, there's the little speakers on the inside of the door mirror up front and then again in the rear at the door handle.

*i think* most models dont have rear tweeters installed, the grill is just there, but the front ones are wired in parrallel to the main LF speaker and that's why there are 2 wires on each, it loops back

Cheers Tom. I was thinking it may have been some sort of loop back alright but wasn't sure. That's what you guys are for !

So basically the best thing to do is to get 2 pairs of wires, stick a male connection at one end to slide into the clip. Then at the other end a female connection to slip onto the new set. This wouldn't have any affecct on the loop back would it ?

Correct. Just make sure the male connection is insulated. Put your ear next to the tweeter cover and listen for any sound whilst covering the main speaker. You should also be ok for depth on the Infinity speakers.

Just to let you know, went and bought some speaker wire and male and female spade connectors. Got home, spent ages making two little harnesses to fit between the new speakers and stock connectors and went out to fit my new handy work.

The bloody male spades were too wide for the connectors :orb_angry One male spade was basically about twice the width of the conenction into the plastic clip. So I got out the snips, cut the bloody things off and wired them up directly.

Wasted a lovely evening frustratingly making my little harnesses !
