Air con help?

Recommended Posts

I've just got back from Kwik-fit to get my A/C gas topped up/changed on my elegance estate TDI. When they looked at the car they found that although there were no leaks, the compressor wasn't kicking in(?) They say it looked like an electrical fault and have done the gas anyway at no charge.

When I flick the econ button on/off there is a definate blip in revs and when I look under the bonnet both the radiator fans spin up. Apart from that I don't know what to look for.

I have read threads about looking at a belt to see if the clutch is spinning but I can't see much cos there's bits in the way.

This is my first car with A/C so I'm a total novice, any suggestions on what to do next?

Cheers

Jimbo

Agreed.

Do you know the difference between an a/c pump, a PAS pump and an alternator? If so, you can check the a/c pump is turning over yourself; otherwise I'd look through Yellow Pages for an automotive air conditioning specialist near you.

so does your aircon actually blow cold or not? you have not said.

I had a similar experience with quickfit they said there was no temp difference after recharging but it turns out they couldnt work my climatronic and the aircon was nice and cold after fiddling with it.

If the pump/compressor (I'm presuming these are the same thing?) is knackered when they replace it do they have to re-gas the system again? I'm just trying to get an idea of how much this is gonna set me back...

Ta

Oh and if anyone know anyone that does air-con repairs in merseyside, I'd be very interedted. Thanks.

Hi Jimbo,

See if anyone near you has VCDS, I have the same fault with my octy. VCDS gave the following readout for mine:

17:13:44 Group 008: Voltages

12.05 V Fresh Air Blower (V2 - specified)

11.93 V Fresh Air Blower (V2 - actual)

13.96 V Voltage (Terminal 15)

Voltage A/C Clutch (N25)

It may show if you have power at the a\c compressor, as you can see I dont have any power to the clutch which im gonna investigate slow time, ps im a refrigeration qualified electrician but i have no experience on car systems, so I am very interested in anything you discover.
