Question about the thermostat in a '98 Felicia

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I bought a used Felicia a bit over a month ago. It's the facelift-model, 1998 with a 1.3 liter rocket engine.

I'm very happy with the car, not once has it left me in trouble in the mornings before school or work. There has been only one slight problem: it has leaked coolant from around the thermostat. The leakage has been so little, that I've been quite lazy fixing it, but now it should finally be fixed as I changed the washer from between the thermostat and the engine and also the hose leading from the coolant tank to the thermostat.

The previous owner had been clever and tried to use glue to fix the leak. I scraped the glue off today and found a hole from under it, right on the side of the thermostat. Here's a picture to demostrate it better: http://bayimg.com/BApoLAAbE

I'm asking, what on earth is that hole? Should it be connected to something? At least driving normal highway speeds it didn't spray any coolant from that hole but what about when the engine gets even more hot during the coming summer? I'm just concerned that dare I drive the car now..

I appreciate the help!

I'm trying to figure out where on the thermostat that is. My felly never gets up to temp when driving and only ever gets up to 90 degrees when stood in traffic (classic thermostat in need of replacement symptoms)

Problem is, I believe the 1.3mpi engines need the whole housing replacing, due to the spring and plunger configuration ?

I'll have a look at my felly this evening and see if I can figure out where that hole is and if anything should be connected.

When looking at the engine from the front, it's on the right side of the thermostat. There's the thin hose coming from the coolant tank to the thermostat, this hole is right under it.

My temperatures seem to be quite fine and logical. I don't see anything wrong with them.

new thermostat and housing is about £50 from skoda dealer:D

Just been out to the carpark (for some reason I went to work in the felly today and totally forgot)

I would say someone thought that the hole was causing the leak and filled it. However as you can see from my pic my thermstat housing is the same.

Thanks, you saved my day! I already feared that I have to spend this lovely day working with the thermo even more :) Wonder what that hole does, or is it just to save weight..

probably some sort of pressure release output ?

Hi,

I drove to school today with my felly with the thermostat hole revealed.

I'm not sure how much of this I'm imaginating, but it felt much more stable and lively especially with a cold engine. The temperatures behave properly also, now the car seems to be OK once again :)

nice one

Just for general knowledge, the thermostat on 1.3 generally breaks leaving the water circuit opened. This is not the case for the 1.6, and don't know about the 1.9! ;)
