Engine Management Warning Light - Urgent

Featured Replies

I need your help urgently, my Engine Management Warning Light (the yellow one that looks like an engine) is constantly on, not flashing. As it only came on late last night I cant phone the garage as the manual says I can carry on driving but with restrictions - call your dealer.

The problem is I need to drive to Glasgow tonight (240 miles) as i work their so I can only contact the garage tommorrow.

The question is am I ok to drive back and is there anything I should or shouldnt do?

My car is a 52 Octavia Vrs.

You've still got your AA membership. Call them. Sorry I can't be any more help.

bets on for a coilpack problem...

Are there any signs of engine problems apart from the Engine Management light being on?

If the car is mis firing under load its probably a coil pack so call the AA

have you changed the exhaust recently or is it blowing, if yes then it may have picked up high emisions which is not detrimental to the car.

If in doubt & you still have AA cover call the AA out, if there are no obvious signs they can plug there lap top into the diagnostic port on the car & read the fault code, I know they can as I persuaded one to do it on my car in London last week & he was suprised to say the least.

You can clear the light by disconecting the battery for about 5 mins, that way if its an intermittent fault it should go away & only come on again should the fault re accur

IF IN ANY DOUBT DONT DRIVE IT & call the AA, You can also contact Skoda assistance at the weekend as I believe you are entitled to a loan car

Update for you. I had to go to a christening today and drove over with no apparent problems, light still on, on the way back, tonight (just got in) the light started to flash and the the engine was misfiring, same as when a coilpack went once before. I have called the AA and they are on the way. Stupidly though I drove home about 8 mile or so and the car is now outside the house, I really needed to get to Glasgow tonight but I dont think I am covered for relay etc if the car is within 1/4 mile of the house.

The annoying thing about this is why didnt they replace all the packs when the last one went?. I am probably going to have to take the day off tomorrow costing me about

They should have replaced all of them, it's 'Skoda Law' but some dealers seem to play a bit fast and loose. On the other hand coil packs can go whether they're new or not.

Where abouts are you? I've got five in my boot.

Thanks Rich,

just got in from being with the AA and he had one, so its all sorted now.

I am leaving to drive to Glasgow in about 1/2 an hour.

I am on the Wirral by the way, thanks again for the offer.

Mark

May I take this opportunity to suggest to 1.8T owners reading this thread that they carry a spare coilpack in their car? At circa

Denis, thanks for the reminder...

Even though my car should be immune to this, the ever increasing amount of miles i seem to be doing will make it a worthwhile investment :)

Anyone got any they want to sell ? :)

You are more than welcome to one of mine. Dealers and independants are still seeing coil pack failures.

I have 4 used H version coilpacks which I would be willing to sell if the price is right. Due to circumstances beyond Skoda's control these do not come with any sort of guarantee other than that they will fail at some totally inconvenient time. :(

Geoff you may be able to pick a coil pack up on Ebay ;)
