Look people this thread has descended into a bit of chaos.

I did not do this to prove my car is better, faster, more economical, got a better engine or that my driving style is any better than what anybody else can achieve. If you really want to know i have been trained to drive to a far higher standard than any Traffic Cop could ever dream of (part of my course was 3 weeks at Hendon). However that does not mean i am some sort of driving god (although i am ;) )

I put this thread up to basically show that if you drive "normally" you can get good economy from a high powered vehicle. Maybe i should take the Advice given and contact VAG R&D to see if they can make all vRS' like mine .

If you highlight my signature you will see what i have done to the car and any number of those things could be contributing to the Economy i got. Also on the Flip side none of them could be.

If you want tips then here are a few (apologies if i am teaching people to suck eggs)

1. Get into as high a gear as possible as soon as possible. As long as the engine isn't labouring then you will get better economy. I often drive through 30mph zones in 6th. (maybe the 300lb/ft of torque helps there)

2. Be alert as to what is going on around you. If you maintain safe distances etc then (im talking motorway driving) you don't need to use the brakes as much.

3. As Johnwg has already stated dont go past 4.5k RPM i will often change up around 3.5K RPM so im not using the turbo as much. I Also skip gears so will go from 1st to 3rd to 6th etc. Again maybe i can do this due to the power i have available.

4. Coast down hills in gear whenever possible. When coming up to junctions again coast in gear. Clarkson said, when he drove the Audi to Edinburgh and back on one tank of fuel, that doing this modern engines use no fuel at all whereas in neutral they do use a bit. I wasn't sure if this was true however my Father has been working on car engines for Ford, Jaguar and Volvo for over 30 years and he confirmed this was infact true. Stay in as high a gear as poss for as long as poss. I will often coast up to roundabouts off motorways in 6th for as long as poss before dropping to 3rd if its clear to continue.

5. Pump up your tyres. May sound daft but if your going to be driving "normally" your never going to be testing the Grip of your tyres. So the more pressure in them the less rolling resistance hence less drag. My tyres are always at 35psi (unless i got a heavy load) even though Skoda recommend 30.5psi (or whatever 2.0 bar is) for 17's

6. Plan your journeys. I often drive at daft o clock in the morning as there is less traffic so it is easier to maintain a constant speed. However it still can be done in traffic it just takes more concentration. I know this wont be possible for people who work 9 - 5 etc but for long journeys try to set off earlier.

7. Don't stop. I dont mean for traffic lights etc i mean don't stop for the loo etc unless you really have to. restarting the car to accelerate back up to motorway speeds will consume a lot more fuel than you think.

8. My car is lowered i dont know much about aerodynamics however i do know that a lowered car has a better Drag coefficient than a none lowered one. As i said before i dont know which if any of my mods have helped. The only one i know for definate that has helped is that maybe at some point in my ownership of the car somebody may have done something like put a REVO Stage II code on it

Those are just a few tips. Essentially don't drive like you stole it stay with the flow of traffic and maintain awareness. Don't get me wrong i didn't buy this car to do economy runs. I also didnt tune it to thrash it. I very rarely thrash my car and the only one time i can say i have honestly thrashed it was on the autobahn in Germany when i wanted to see exactly what speed i could achieve according to satnav.

Just because a car has a shed load of power doesn't mean you have to thrash it. If you know how to use the power properly you can still have an enjoyable bit of fun.

As i have previously said i really do not care now what people believe. Unless i video the whole journey or you sit in the car with me (only 1 at a time though as that will effect the economy  :P :) then some people will probably never believe me.

But i am being as genuine and sincere as possible and not winding people up when i say that i did over 600miles on ONE tank of fuel

But mater, the problem is your supporting photos are 20% worse than your claimed economy. The reason this descended into chaos is because you never addressed that disparity when it was pointed out.

Maybe i messed up the accurisation then

Like i said i dont know why its showing the disparity but short of me taking you in the car with me then i dont think im ever going to convince you wega.

Maybe we should just settle that i'm telling the truth to the best of my knowledge and that you believe there is something wrong in either the calculation by me, the car or the accurisation.

The only other thing i can think of is because i brimmed the tank to start with and the maxidot hasn't taken into account the extra fuel in the expansion tank and the ECU has somehow "ignored" it i don't know

We can debate this all day and as i have already said unless you get in the car with me i don't think you will ever believe me

Definitely time to move on isn't it. :) I'm terribly conscious of a certain amusing but astonishingly politically incorrect b&w image that I won't link to but can be found at the top of a google image search for "arguing on the internet".

I used to have that on my office door

Carl:thumbup:

Get a room you two ! ;)

Just agree to differ - who's right ? - who's wrong ? - who cares !

It's caused an interesting discussion.

Now both go away and buy a Bop It Extreme 2, then you can post your highest scores

117 is my highest on Bop it :P

My fiancee got me one for Xmas :D

117 is my highest on Bop it :P

I've just gone up to 143 - and that 's left me with a headache - Rob Clubley reckons he's done 250 once, so that's my target

Gonna have to get back on it now when i get back.

Bop it

Twist it

Pull it

Spin it

Soooooooo addictive. Wonder if i can play it on my drive to Folkestone :P

No way - you'll be too busy concentrating on your fuel economy

Although I feel slightly guilty saying it, that's a great internet arguing poster!

Steve

It really is :) , but then again...

I am fecking impressed Mr Mater. My car usually does 360-390 but to see that kind of mileage is just unbelieveable.

By the way, I'd better be careful what I say, because I do believe you. I mean actually "believe" you. I wasn't trying to say I didn't believe that you could get it. Although it is pretty unbelieveable.

also need to take note thats good for diesel but petrol 1.5k to 2.5k rpm is optimuim for petrol fsi as at 3k rpm the fsi kicks in.

I've amazed myself! Further to the photos I posted earlier on, I've just come back from a 35 mile round trip Preston to Southport to visit the out-laws (sorry in-laws), and these are the latest returns

Now on 110 miles since filling the tank and zeroing the trip meter, mpg tonight for this run at 66.4mpg, fuel guage STILL on full, and 665 miles left in tank showing. Can't complain if it's going to do anywhere near 775 miles to a tankful!

More photos to prove!

Mike

Well done, Mike. I have found that it is perfectly, and repeatedly possible to exceed 70mpg on the octavia 1.9TD, provided that you do not exceed 62 mph! This will give you a reading on a full tank of over 800 miles!

I have also found thought that as soon as you approach 70+mph, the fuel consumption descends rapidly into the high 50's, with a normal 70mph drive getting between 51-57mpg.
