quick detailing question?

Featured Replies

hi guys

ive been saving up for some time now and decided to get some detailing products.I quite like meg products and have seen the 3 step paint cleaner, polish and wax.

the qustion i have is do i need to use the paint cleaner? and i also want to get a clay bar and when do i use the clay, before wax i guess but do you polish before you clay? or just clay then polish?:confused::confused:

cheers

The paint cleaner has it's uses, I use it for door shuts

Process would be:-

wash

clay

re wash

dry

polish

wax/sealant (LSP)

I personally don't rate the Megs 3step as IMO there are better off the shelf products out there.

I'd go with Autoglym Super Resin Polish for the polish stage & Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection for the LSP.

:)

I used the three step system and it gave a very good finish ...it also gave me tennis elbow  the first two go on easy but are a right swine to polish off ...the wax is quite good and easy to use......you are probably better off just claying the car and then applying a good wax

I've been tempted by the meg's product line as well. Have you seen their YouTube page? some very good video's :)

YouTube - MeguiarsUSA's Channel

Its, rinse, wash, rinse, Clay, rinse, wash, rinse, dry, polish's, and then seal. Then 24h later a layer of wax for extra protection.

Personally, Megs and Autogylm are over rated but well advertised. Id recommend Poor boys, SSR 2 and SSR 1, Followed by the EX-P sealant then a layer of DoDo juice (the best one to your colour car) My car is blue, so i use Rain forrest rub, although purple haze would be good to.

The products are a little more expensive, but last longer and dont have fillers in them like megs stuff.

Thats my personal opinion anyway, I use the stuff for correction, its very good, down to earth products.

I know we have spoken via PM on a few occasions so just that I am clear in your question, what are you trying to achieve?

As 'cleandetail' has said your process should be:

Rinse, wash, rinse, clay, rinse, wash, rinse, dry, polish and then seal.

The Megs 3 Stage system will attempt to prepare your paintwork for some sort of LSP and also remove some light swirling but the only true way to remove swirls and scratches is by machining........if you invest in a good clay then you will find that you can make your paintwork a lot cleaner and smoother but this will not remove defects which are visible in the light.......

thanks guys for your help, i just want to try and keep the car looking clean and smooth for now until i learn how to use a machine polisher.

there are so many products on the market its just hard deciding whats best without wasting money on buying products over and over again until you find whats right for you.

i think for now i will go with a megs clay bar and autoglym polish and extra gloss potection.

also another quick question is there anyway you can use snow foam or get the same effect without using a pressure washer as i havent even got a hose pipe as we live in a flat.

all i can say is the one best thing i ever learnt (actually from polished bliss) was to use the two bucket method of washing, along with a lambswool mitt and a good quality waffle weave drying towel... What a difference just that alone makes!!!!!

since then Last Touch is an excellent product to add a deep glossy look in the drying process

hth :)

Not that I can think of. Snow foam works best through a foam lance connected to a pressure washer. There are a couple of others called a Gilmour & Superspray which connect straight to the hose but due to relative lack of pressure don't really have the same 'snow' effect.

How are you currently cleaning your car out of curiosity?:confuse:

Used to bring my astra up looking well, but recently taking more interest in detailing. I've started to look further a field.

My car has recently been buffed with G3 then the Megs 3 stage system, all i can say is after putting a layer of Collinite 915 on, the stage 3 carnuba wax is shown up.

Water sheets off of the panel while washing, where the megs use to smear.

I started off using the Glimour set up for a normal garden hose and it did me well but it's not comparable to the set up you can have with a HD Foam Lance on a pressure washer..........:(

Here are some pics of both set ups just to help:

Might be an idea mate, I used to have to do the same thing when I lived at one place but had to move as the car cleaning came first............
