Engine Management light/EGR.

Featured Replies

I have the engine management light on (Skoda Fabia 1.4 16V, 2001), on since i bought the car (why oh why did I do that?). The code is; 16785, EGR insufficient flow, so I had a look tonight at the valve but it's not that easy to just remove, however I did find a vacuum pipe which goes on to the side of the unit, runs under the distributor wiring and clips in beside the throttle body, it then goes into something like a valve, black at the front, grey at the back but then just ends. Now there are small holes in the grey plastic, so either it's some kind of breather or it's a valve with a bit missing and if that's the case then I an thinking there should be a pipe out the back to ????

Here I hope is a picture: DSC01251.jpg

Any ideas anyone:confused:

Coming round to the idea this must be breather and what I need to do is take the EGR off, clean and replace, unless anyone has any other ideas? Useful information also would be, does anyone know where the metal EGR pipe bolts on at the opposite end or do I just need to use my initiative? Cheers.

Anyone any idea about this, the latest is that after doing another Vag-com scan the engine management light went off, and stayed off for about a day. Strange thing is I did another scan tonight as we seem to have another fault, the original code has not recurred. So I haven't done anything but no code, although there is another code now to do with the ABS and this is mainly why I did the scan because this light came on, seems like an intermittent memory/power failure but surely this wouldn't out on the engine management light?

I'm not sure if you're a Freedom member, but for the £12 membership fee there is an 'Ask a Tech' forum where they answer these sorts of queries. There are several Skoda/VAG Master Techs on here who will help you out, but I think you have to be a member to get their advice.

i have a similar thing happening on mine. mechanic friend says fault is coming from a high flow through the egr. egr opperates correct so the error must be coming from else where. any ideas?

There is plenty on this if you do a search, but I had the same fault caused by a previous owner removing the egr and re using the metal gaskets allowing an air leak, new gaskets = no egr light.

Faskoda, the easiest way to remove the egr is to remove the nuts and studs completely - I replaced mine with stainless bolts, it's easy to slide the egr out but leave the egr connected electrically or you will have to re adapt it. At the same time, remove the throttle body but leave the multi plug connected for the same reason. You will then see the other end of the egr pipe at the base of the inlet manifold. Clean all three items with carb cleaner or similar and replace with new gaskets and o ring for the throttle body. The item in your photo is a breather filter.

First thing to do is remove the steel egr pipe that goes from the egr valve to the intake manifold and checked is it blocked, and also check both ports:) Then clear the fault code and give it a good long drive

Removing the egr pipe is a bit of a pig, there is a bracket halfway along that is bolted to the bottom of the thermostat housing. It's easier to access the pipe by removing egr and throttle body, leaving the pipe in place.

Thanks for the replies folks, looks like I need to get my hands dirty again. I think it wold be worth cleanig the EGR, pipe and throttle body then I can rule that out but teh EGR code still hasn't recurred although the emgine management light keeps coming back on after a short drive. Last time I checked it I had experienced an episode wher the ABS and other brake system warning lights came on and I had a logged fault code for an intermittent ABS control unit power failure. Not sure if this is related or not, it hasn't happened again but teh Engine management light is back on, I just haven't checked for codes yet, too bloomin' cold !

Thanks again.

, too bloomin' cold ! Thanks again.

Yes it certainly is, I've got some brake work waiting for me to complete - but it might be warmer soon! I'm from the West and live in the East - but I've never come to terms with the wind over here - and that is even working in a double garage!
