Turbo Failure

Featured Replies

Hi,

Not been here for a while so please forgive me!

On Tuesday (28th April) my car (Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDI Reg: 05) broke down whilst on the way to a customer site. (I live in Newbury - customer was in Beckenham, South London).

The car started making some strange whining nosies, so I pulled into a Halfords car park (how handy!!) and called the AA.

The arrived in 20 mins (great service!) and diagnosed the nosie to a turbo fault / failure and I had to be recovered back to Newbury on the back of the AA van.

The car went back to the local Skoda garage and the turbo fault was confirmed.

Anyway - got the car back yesterday (Friday 1st May) and only realy used it to go to the shops (9 miles round trip).

Today the car has started to make some more whining nosie when accelerating (although only between 15k and 25k revs) - the nosie is not the same as the original failure.

I've just called the AA (from home) just to be on the safe side.

Any ideas if this is related to the turbo (again) or something caused by having to have that replaced??

Long shot I know, but just thought I'd ask.

I'll update later with the results from the AA.,

Cheers

Lee

They banned turbochargers on F1 cars yonks ago............................;)

Anyway.................

Mine was replaced a while ago after letting go in spectacular fashion and its made a whining noise since I drove it out of the dealership.

Only thing I would say is check your oil more regularly after having a new turbo fitted.

Well the man from the AA has said suspect turbo - great....

He had a good description....it sounded like a budgie was under there!

Why should I now put up with noise when the old one was perfectly quiet?

Had a brand spanking turbo fitted to my 1.9tdi last week - the old one made no noise at all. The new one sounds like a distant siren when spooling up (sounds exactly like the noise most op's hear before they go bang) Consensus seems to be it's going to go bang soon or it's nothing to worry about - go figure.

I've got to disagree with the turbo being louder once replaced.

Mine let go in spectacular fashin and the exhaust turbine wheel became embedded in the catalytic convertor! (There wasn't even a bang!) Just lost power for a split second and the car carried on as normal until i tried passing a lorry.

Since having the replacement, my mpg has gone up and the turbo no longer sounds like a emergency services siren.

It did start off almost silent, but after a couple hundred miles it became slightly audiuable as it bedded in. But it is silent in comparison to the old one.

I found whilst the car was idling, after say 30-40 seconds usually it would start whining as if it was picking up speed. I quick blip of the throttle seamt to settle it down for a further 30-40 seconds before it repeated its self.

Have you been supplied with remanufactured units by chance?

I know its probably not the cause, but just a thought.

This is a little video of when the turbo went on my Civic...

My new turbo sounds different - a bit like the failure noise, in the early part of the rev range like you describe..

A few tips that may stop your turbo's from blowing up, these where given to me by a race engineer, who looks after all the cars at Knock-hill

Always change your oil before its due

When you have been on a run allow the car to idle for a few mins, this gives everything time to settle back down and time for the turbo to cool down.

he has changed a few turbos due to folk hammering there cars and just turning them off

It's good advice - that's why a lot of those Jap import cars have 'turbo timers'

My Civic's a company car so I don't give a damn about it, plus its still in warranty to 90k/3 Years so replaced free. If my own personal car had a turbo I'd definitely be heeding the advice above.
