Back... but have I done the right thing?!

Featured Replies

Hey guys, dunno if anyone really remembers me on here but I was a relatively frequent poster up until about 6 months ago when I swapped my 54 plate black Fabia vRS for a rather more serious silver 56 plate Octavia L&K. However, driving it failed to quicken my pulse the way my little Furby used to and so after a lot of thought I am swapping it for a Fabia vRS Special Edition (number 245).

I have put a deposit down on the car and am picking it up in a week or so as it needs a service and there are 4 new tyres on order for it which won't be in until next friday. The car has done 28k and is in pretty immaculate condition. To be honest, I always wanted an SE as I loved the colour and the leather interior but at the time when I bought my 54 plate vRS I just couldn't afford one as they were still around 12-13k. I test drove the one I'm buying yesterday and even just taking it for a quick spin round the block near the dealers, I enjoyed driving it so much more than I do the L&K.

I don't know what it is about the L&K I dislike so much because it is a seriously good car and unbelievable value for money, but it just hasn't got much... character, I think is the word I am looking for. Personally, I feel it looks pretty bland in silver and in terms of driving it, you can't really throw it into bends as it tends to roll a bit on the corners, it doesn't have the gruntiness of the vRS, economy ain't as good as I'd expected, it doesn't inspire confidence or feel very planted in the wet, the sound system is total crap and because it has 17" alloys, the road noise at motorway speeds is ridiculously loud! Also, just about every Octy I see is a taxi unless it's a vRS and for some reason that annoys the hell out of me, haha! You're probably thinking that I never should have bought it and I am too!

The L&K is stupidly well equipped with everything you could imagine and I think that initially blinded me to it's driving faults and persuaded me go for it, but I think that actually enjoying driving a car is a bit more important that automatic windscreen wipers (which are pretty useless actually) and xenon headlights. And I loved driving my little vRS. I think really, the only things I'd really miss about the well specced L&K are the cruise control (which the SE has anyway), the rear parking sensors (which I don't suppose I really need in the little Furby) and the auto dimming mirrors, which I guess I'll just have to live without. Everything else looks nice, but I reckon I can live without and I think I'd prefer to see a sexy race blue Fabia on my drive every day rather than the Octy.

So... I'm just posting this really because I'm going to be back around on here now and I am after your thoughts and feelings on the above. I always found you guys very friendly and helpful and I really can't wait to get back in a Fabia and start enjoying driving again and sharing my thoughts and experiences with you guys.

Thanks for reading the above - sorry it was a bit long winded.

Life's too short, go with what your heart says :)

The Fabia vRS is still a practical car anyway, so you can appease both your heart and head!

I think if you see what you have said you no that you have done the right thing by getting the vrs and even more so when its an SE, i love the colour and seats too! you will not be doubting the choice once your driving with a big grin on your face:cool:

enjoy:)

If you can live without the space, then there is no problem....

Whilst the Octavia is a great car, the Fabia vRS is quite special not to mention sought after.. and of course a brilliant drive too :)

More to the point, welcome back ;)

Thanks guys - I just feel a bit weird for swapping to a 'lesser' car in terms of spec (I'm paying more or less the same for the new Fabia as I was for the Octy) but the Fabia just has so much more character than the Octavia and that's important to me. I won't miss the size of the octy - I got planty of luggage in the boot of the fabia no problem. I will miss some of the toys, but I think the driving enjoyment I get from the fabia will outweigh the cons of not having the extras.

Also, the last 3 letters of the Fabia's reg plate are VRS - how cool is that? Haha!

You are now entering Stutter Country...

...Twinned with Leaky de Doors, Squeaky on the Bushes, Rapidly Disintegrating Bushes, Creaky de la Seats, Spongy Brakes, 4x4 Ride Height, Impossible-To-Keep-Clean Seats, etc...

Personally, I wouldn't be anywhere else (I've a silver, 04-plate Furbatron). ;)

Welcome back to Furbatronia.

, Impossible-To-Keep-Clean Seats.

Or not in his case

Or not in his case

Oh yeah, it's an SE, innit. :o

Lucky beggar.

Hang on, I've had a SS retrim.

W00t! :)

Your making it sound like a Vauxhall.

Your making it sound like a Vauxhall.

Then it's just as well I stopped when I did , eh? ;)

But, I believe, you've called it worse... a 'shopping trolly' IIRC.

over the last few weeks I've been driving my mum's Seat Leon Cupra, (remapped by customcode, with a Forge FMIC and green cotton air filter) and I have to say I wish I'd never sold it to her!

It was a case of needs must unfortunately because it was too small for me, the wife, three kids, two dogs and a cat - even though we don't normally go out in the car all at the same time.

Small is definitely beautiful, and I'd have another one as a second car any day - or a Fabia vRS!!

There didn't seem to be any 'wobble' when I test drove the SE - I believe a mod could cure it? Maybe that had been done. Brakes seemed fine too. Doors have been re-sealed according to the stealer, as the leak got on my nerves with my old Furb. Ride height always seemed ok to me too, but lowering is always an option. I never had a single problem with my old one. Thanks for the enthusiasm though, haha! Glad I'm back here (although if I was a girl I reckon this thread would be 6 pages long by now...), haha!

Goodbye droogies!

Welcome back

Think positively............................................................

Less car to clean! :D

Anyone who reads your first post will be no doubt that youve done the right thing , hope you enjoy the SE , theyre nice looking cars , wouldnt mind one myself sometime!

But, I believe, you've called it worse... a 'shopping trolly' IIRC.

Well if that cap fits.... although a shopping trolly probably handles better.

Whit? :bigshock:

Is ye nuts?

i couldnt be ****ed reading all that.

i couldnt be ****ed reading all that.

Then surely it would have been infinitely more polite/nicer to have simply said nothing than to have deposited a catty comment? ;)

As it happens, what you missed was interesting, well considered, well composed and well punctuated.

Heck, there was only one very minor literal --- the 'f' in Friday not being capitalised (are you getting this Len? :D).

Aspirational, that's what the 'long-winded' post was.

Irony anyone?

Hahahaha!

I think i can see where your coming from and definitely think the SE is the right move  I just wish i could afford the extra to have one :(

Back... but have I done the right thing?!

yes

I know exactly why you are doing it. Every weekend I have to fight my wife for the keys to the vRS. The Passat is loaded with toys and it's massively roomy and extremely comfortable to go long distances in, but it doesn't inspire love the way the Furby does.

And it's an SE, so if you like leather and Race Blue paint, that's a further bonus. And yes, I am envious.;)

Loving these latest replies guys! Keep em coming! The more I think about it, the more I can't wait to have the new Furby on my driveway. I've got just over a week to wait and photos will soon be posted. wja96, I love the race blue paint and the red calipers, they look awesome IMO. My Octy is loaded with gadgets and stuff, but I kinda liked the uncluttered, simplistic vRS and the unrivalled (in any car I've ever driven anyway) wrecking ball of power that shoves you in the back when you put your foot down in second and third
