Front Brake Pads

Featured Replies

OK yes another brake question but I've had a browse and my question isn't answered.

I think my pads need changing soon on my vRS however I don't want to go the 312mm route just yet (due to no money :rotz:) so was just going to replace the pads.

Skoda Claybank have quoted me £35ish for a set of fronts while euro car parts have them listed for around £25-30 but I don't understand that the differences are between the same brand :(

Can anyone recommend these pads or shall I play it safe and get the skoda pads?

Your local Skoda Dealer isn't called a "STEALer" for nothing ;)

But remember the dealer doesnt set the prices for parts.

Not all brake pads are the same. Do you really want to save £12 on BRAKES?

the ones from TPS will be genuine VAG parts, as they are the VAG parts dept

Fair enough, but they don't do retail, do they?

I think that you will find that its mainly ECP and GSF that sell OEM brake pad kits for VAG cars, but as always there is a "but" in as much as both these outlets will only sell a rationalised range of OEM brake pads for VAG cars, you might be lucky and get bang on what your car really needs, or you might just almost get what your car needs - or more correctly what you want to fit to replace like with like. I've been there done that - twice, and ended up resorting to asking for help from the brake pad manufacturer's UK agent - which got the required result! So, I'd think, as you have been advised already, its off to your local Skoda dealer if you want "like for like". I'd still like to hear what reception TPS gives DIYers though - as its meant be "trade only" - I'd like to think that they would "play ball" but I'd have to drive past my local dealer to get to them - so without knowing "how it goes" I just pay the extra!

 So long as you buy a 'decent' brand like Ferodo or Mintex you should be OK as they will be as good as the originals.

You will have to go on the engine code

Well the OEM ones I have on have Ferodo stamped on them but besides the uprated DS2500 range (which are priced at around £60) I haven't found a "normal" set outside a Skoda dealer. :(

Ive had no problems with the TPS around mine. They were happy to help me. Cant speak for any other ones though

I'll stick my neck out and say that Ferodo are not VAG OEM for brake pads! If you are trying to get Ferodo pads then maybe you should be looking at general "brake parts" outlets and not outlets with a bias towards VAG - ie "Germanic" cars. One aspect of the term OEM is the way that certain manufacturers are indeed suppliers to the car marque's factory, and not for "that part". One company that springs to mind is ATE - a well respected brake parts manufacturer, tends to get listed as OEM - okay they supply some of the front callipers - but I'd doubt if any of the current range of cars leave the factory with ATE brake pads or brake discs - although the previous model Ibizas did get ATE pads on some models.

Maybe you should try using the internet - look for Ferodo and get them to tell you where your local stockist is located.
