Which polish?

Featured Replies

Chaps,

Just preparing for the mega wash 'n' wax.....but I'm not sure which polish to go for? been looking at the new Turtle wax spray on, or Autoglym, but any advice would be appreciated!!

As you have a black car, the first question to ask is what is the condition of your paint work? When the light catches it, is it covered in swirl marks or little scratches?

Steve

you could alway try the auto glyn high definition wax ive herd its ment to be good

If you're shopping on the high street I'd recommend Autoglym Super Resin Polish followed by Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection.

Unless your cars been detailed previously it's highly likely to have some paint defects (swirls etc) so the SRP will fill & hide those to a certain extent & the EGP will offer some good protection, especially if you add another layer at a later date.

Enjoy:)

Generally its in cracking nick, but there are a bit of both, swirls and light scratches! unfortunately the previous tit, I mean owner looks like they run through a car wash with grit on the roof!! this is hopefully going to be polished out at the paint shop.

Lee.

I'd second the AG Super Resin followed by some Collonite 476, I removed a couple light swirls at the weekend - did 2 panels and my arm was ready to drop off! must save my pennies for a machine polisher :D

Bilt Hamber Autobalm and Collinite Marque d'Elegance Wax as a topper

Sorry to sound thick....'Detailed'??

Apologies, as in machine polished to remove paint defects & all the other things before & aft which make up a 'detail'.

Have a look at Baker21's Detail posts in the Styling & Car Care section for a better understanding.

Detailing = SniffPetrol ;)

To try and reduce the light swirl marks, I use Meguirs Scratch X or Swissol Cleanse followed by Swissol Onyx Wax.

I find the Autoglym stuff too harsh and it leaves loads of white powder, which on a black car, means you are forever sweeping the damn thing clean!

Bilt Hamber leaves no residue, can be used on ALL the car and fills swirls too.

It really is good

Bilt-Hamber Laboratories - Polish and Wax - Auto-balm

I use AG SRP and Ultra Deep Shine (I think, not sure its EGP). Anyway, always brings it up nice, but I always think the first wash after a polish and wax brings the car up nice as you can wash away the residue.

Then I top up with some Megs quick detailer. My god that stuff would make ear wax bead!

Couple of points:

TGi, you may know this, but it's just the way your reply read in order of posting after the initial question was raised: a wax is the final layer when you've finished everything else, not a polish. A polish is a cutting compound you use to get rid of light blemishes, such as swirls.

Pagey1255, detailing is just another name for the whole process of cleaning, polishing, waxing, blah, blah, blah.

Steve vRS, if you're getting loads of white powder when using AG stuff, you're using WAY too much. You should get hardly any when used properly. Remember, as a cutting compound, AG SRP only needs to be put on thinly to give a slight haze: any more and you'll get the problem you're encountering where there's a ton of annoying white dust as well as it achieving no more than using a small amount. Also, it'll ending up being more expensive cos you're using more!

Personally, I use Bilt Hamber Autoclay to clean ALL the small imperfections off, like tar (doesn't need detailing spray like other makes, just water), then AG Super Resin Polish, followed by AG Extra Gloss Protection, topped of with Collinite #915 wax.

Looks great afterwards and giving it a quick wipe with a decent detailing spray regularly keeps it looking good without having to wash it so often. Again, i'm with runboy on this one: Meguiars detailing spray is good... and it smells lovely and coconutty!

AG HD is really the stuff - got my on ebay for £26 with applicator, cloth and the wax tub - £23 less than in Hallfords et al.

The result stunning! so easy to put on and the car looks perfect.

James.

FWIW you are not supposed to put other items on top of the BH Autobalm from what I recall. Sure the guys from BH said this on Detailing World.

Anyway, I'd say use SRP, a coat of turtlewax gloss guard and then a coat of two of collinte 476s.

That will easily last you 6 months too.

BH dont recommend a topper but many people find the flat water effect off putting and prefer a beading one that can be achieved with a wax layer:)
