Blown exhaust and brakes - yes, I'm back!

Featured Replies

Hello gentle people, long time no see  I've been moving house, starting new jobs, and all sorts and the lovely little Felicia did it all with panache.

However, Monday afternoon it started sounding a bit rough, and by the time I did the afternoon school run it was a loud noise - like I had done a 'Top Gear' on the car and added one of those boyracer exhausts.

This morning, it got worse and worse. The school run was embarrassing with the amount of noise the car was making, and I was really panicking that it was going to blow up or something

Took it to Skoda Rivervale, and that was a scary drive in itself, and they are doing the repairs for me.

The middle part of the exhaust has sheared away and damaged the catalytic converter, so it needs completely replacing, and the front brake pads need replacing (they had started to squeak).

Now I don't want to depress myself too much, but how much would you say for all that work? Bearing in mind that there is no way I could do any of it myself (have a very bad back and unable to bend or lie under the car or anything like that), and that without my car I am well and truly boogered so need it done quickly. I'm almost scared to tell you how much he's quoted me for the exhaust work and the brakes in case you tell me I'm a complete mug who's been taken for a ride :o

Thanks in advance! :D

You might not need a new catalytic converter

Parkside Bolton done me a new back box and middle section for £100 on my Felicia 1.6 unfortunatly I sold the car with the exhaust!!! Oct 2008 Exhaust was done.

My mechanic fitted my Felly with new front discs and pads for £106. Back in 2006.

I reckon you're prob looking at £250.

At a Skoda dealer my guess is...

Parts cost.... £200 for cat converter. £50 for centre exhaust, £10 for gaskets/bolts.. Labour maybe £100, so I would guess £360 in total at a Skoda dealer including vat and labour (but would hope it to be less).

At a cheapie exhaust place I would hope for around £150 using non-genuine parts. Seems to be some debate about the longevity of the cheapie cat converters though.

Edit: Forgot to include pads. The set of pads costs about £25 parts, unfortunately I think the labour for that would be more.

I feel much better. Including both the brakes and the exhaust he's quoted me £500. That's parts, labour and VAT and getting the car back tomorrow. So I think I'm quite happy with that - thanks fellas!

Just picked up my baby and she drives like a dream once more!! They did the work, washed and hoovered her, and the service was absolutely excellent!!!

Am going to get the little niggles in her done over the next few months and am more than happy to go there. The salesman explained everything to me in terms I could understand, and was really helpful and lovely.

Three cheers for Rivervale, and a major hug for my Cutie who is back on my driveway!

Did they just change the pads or discs aswell?

Glad you're happy and motoring!! I need to get my Favorit running again!!!

Now Captain, how am I meant to know?!!!:rofl: What did you do to your Favorit?

The fuel pumps busted on my Favorit so her engine is silent......

Read the receipt bonny lass. If there's a line like:-

Front Discs 2 @ £30 £60

Then they changed the discs, which may or may not have been necessary; no way am I commenting on that beyond that brake squeal can mean that the front pads are down to the metal, in which case they will have damaged the discs.

F*****G Robbing B******S, About 1 1/2 hours work maximum, so even at £50 an hour, over £400 for parts, is a bit steep. Sorry if this sounds Harsh, but you realy should find another garage to go to

Did you read the bit about the full exhaust, including cat? There's £150 to 200 in the cat alone IME.

Genuine yes. But if you get a cheapie pattern part special £80 or less. No idea how long the cheapies last though.
