Mk1 instrument cluster gone weird / other problems

Featured Replies

My sisters other half has a T reg mk1 2.0GLXi auto and he has an issue with the instrument cluster, come to think of it when I was in the car bank holiday monday the car was behaved oddly a couple of time. I'll post whats been happening in order, going back to that weekend.

1) Car seemed to loose all power when driving along, and after hesitating the problem went away and then drove normally.

2) Stalled in slow traffic approaching a roundabout and was very difficult to restart.

3) After leaving a junction, car continued to accellerate by itself even with no foot on pedals, had to shift to "N" to stop the car with engine revving to max RPM. After switching off and having difficulty restarting car was ok again.

4) Currently its difficult to start both cold and warm, although it does start eventually. Speedo, Rev Counter, Fuel Guage and Temp Guage dont work. Indicator green lights and headlights on warning are however fine.

I guess all these maybe linked in some way, although not having knowledge of early mk1s I dont know where to start looking.

Hi Mannyo,

I think that you having here the classic PCB failure in Mk1 which is either print is bad, or componant. Try removing the 15 number fuse to get instrument working, with reset each time. maybe print or componant for ECU is bad also, or it is the coincidence seperate issue for engine cutting out.

I see that you are the Briskoda staff here, and so I will ask please that you sign the bad instrument panel poll for TV watchdog, for the Felicia Racer person.

Thank you, and please use removal of fuse 15 (5 amp) to restore some function.

Poll for instrument panel fault.

This thread and poll is going to be the base of our petition to skoda to get these gauges replaced under warrantee.

What we intend to do, is present skoda with our petition.

If they fail to do anything about it, then we WILL be taking this to BBC's Watchdog.

. If everyone could vote if the've had the problem or not.

. Post what model octavia mk1 it is. (including engine size and trim)

. Also post your dissatisfaction to skoda.

This data will be used to help us get the gauge's repaired free of charge under warrantee, irrespective if the car is out of warrantee, as these cars shouldn't have this problem.

We need video's and testimony's from skoda octavia owners too. (if possible)

Ok here is the petition.

-------------------------------------------

We the undersigned.

Petition to Skoda,

To make an offical recall to the Skoda Octavia mark one.

The fault is with the gauges, It can be intermittant.

They all zero whilst driving, which is dangerous as you cant tell the

Speed of the car, the revv's, the temperature, or the fuel level.

The trip computer carries on working, and the mpg.

However a temporary fix has been discovered by the users of "briskoda.net"

to remove fuse no. 15, which zero's the digital trip gauges, but the dials

now function, however they dont function correctly.

The cause is believed to be due to dry joints on the regulators at back of the gauges.

This fault makes the car unfit to drive,

and should be replaced Free of charge as a recall irrespective of warrantee.

It is the Octavia mark one.

and is Irrespective of mileage or age of the car, as they should last the life of the vechile.

Sign petition below:

(by voting YES you have signed) - dont forget to post details of your car.

Chris Smith - (Felicia Racer)

It really needs a VCDS scan, the insrument fault may not be related to the running fault.

My initial thoughts are to replace the temperature sensor and clean the throttle body.

He is bringing the car to me on Saturday, hopefully my local garage will be able to scan the car for me.

Hi mannyo,

Running problem will be seen on a scan, but not instrument panel fault. This instrument fault is not showing with scaning, for MK1.

Took the car to my local garage this morning, and Simon scanned the car for me.

Three faults came up, fuel temp sensor, some kind of idle problem and something related to me fiddling this morning, Faults cleared and will see which ones come back, the idle problem most likely cause is a dodgy hose and of course the fuel temp sensor.

Took the cluster apart and checked the PCB for dry joints, but there are to many to check thoroughly and its all surface mount so difficult to look at.

The cluster I got working again by pulling the infamous fuse 15, and the instruments now work again with a few caveats. The display blanks when key removed, and the memory is forgotten and reset to zero on next restart. The only problem I have is what else fuse 15 handles, the manual says "instrument cluster" and "automatic gearbox". This car is an auto, so I am not sure what element of the gearbox no longer has power.

The garage has passed me the details of who they use to fix instrument clusters, so he is going to give them a bell to see if they can sort his.

We dont have the 4 digit SKC for this dashpod, so even getting a secondhand one and doing a swap is going to be problematic, especially if the replacement doesnt come with the SKC either.

Hi Manyo,

My cluster is now the second hand replacement also, but the dealer will need to get SKC which is a download automatically by PC which they do not even see, these days..

You may have missed the link here that I was giving to you in the first thread reply, but here it is again for you, as this guy is having one for sale for £60.

I am finding that it is not easy to locate ones that are in salvage yards.

Thank you may be also use for you http://briskoda.net/items-sale/mk1-o...luster/145146/

This may be good for your daughters friend.

Regards for you

Mannyo,

Sounds like you have got someone looking into the repair of the instrument cluster already.

However for information or a further option I used BBA-Reman to repair my cluster last year (TDi GLX 2000). It seems to be a common problem on VAG cars! I found the service from BBA very efficient and it came in a lot cheaper than a new dash or even having to have one programmed for the car. The benefit being that you do not need to re-program the imobiliser.

The webpage below will give you the contact details etc..

good luck

Hi Deadly/Mannyo

BBA Reman took money for repair/rebuild from relative of mine, and returned it 3 times to him as having been fixed here, but it was still with the same problem. They took almost £300 English pounds, and would not return monies untill he had a new instrument panel fitted at the Skoda Dealer, and had paperwork that made proof of this.

This is the policy for them, so they say.

He was having the bad time of removing the panel three times and sending it for to them. It was very bad that they, told him that the fix had been done here.

I would not use these people for repair, as my relative is a honest guy always.

Soviet:rolleyes::rotz:;)

I have warned over these people in another thread also.
