chipping a standard fabia vrs

Featured Replies

hello all! :)

i;ve been reading quite abit on here about the chipping options for a fabia vrs and i'm sort of semi tempted. But i couldnt find any previous posts about the sort of thing i;m after. From what i gather the clutch is the only thing that could cause problems cos its rated to 280 lb/f of torque and that is only 50 more than stock. If i want more torque i'd have to either drive sensibly and/or change the clutch to the sachs one.

am i right so far?

i'm a bit of a newb to getting cars chipped but my previous car a ford escort i spent £1k on it getting it unichipped and rolling roaded. A total waste of money as it only produced a whopping 15 bhp extra even with other mods.since then i've become alot more sensible and it shows...well i bought a fabia!!:)

now my fabia vrs is standard. can i just get it chipped without any mods and what sort of gains am i likely to get? i dont want anything fancy just maybe a gain of about 30-40bhp and abit extra torque(not too much that will kill the clutch). Whats the options? please help.appreciate the advice as always! u lot are great

Yes you can get it remapped without any other modifications no problem, as you've mentioned though with some of the more aggressive remaps you're clutch will most definately slip, however there are many tuners on here (notably Jabba) that can offer you a cluch friendly remap at most with OEM clutch to around 170bhp.

There are loads of fellow Brisky members that have remaps and not upgraded their clutch it just depends on what sort of remap you're after. Personally I have a Revo map with a switcher that plugs into the diagnostic port so I can revert it back to stock 130bhp but I've never used it at all. Within a week of having the remap though the clutch was replaced, along with the suspension... its a slippery slope! :D

Enjoy

I had this dilemma myself, I thought about it for ages and did my research as best I could as to who has the smoothest maps, as I am running a standard clutch too.

In the end it was between Performance Torque and Angel Tuning, both getting good feedback and recognised for their smoothness.

So yesterday I took the plunge and had it done with Angel Tuning - the only reason being they are the closest to me! Rang up in the morning, and fitted me in as soon as I could get there!

I am so happy with the results, the power is so smooth, it feels like a different car (more like a petrol) the power is there right through the rev range, and the performance is something else :D Just dont boot it below 2k rpm and I dont see why the clutch should wear that much faster than with the standard map. Lets be honest all the torque is in a massive spike with the standard one, so in my opinion you could do just as much damage with that.

Anyway hope this helps a bit!

It very much depends what you want.

Do you want the smile as the torque kicks in, or the smoother delivery?

Any of the ' personalised mappers ' like Jabba etc can do this for you.

However be aware the off the shelf maps will just 'lift' the ecu steeings to give you the increase in torque & power, these all quote approx 20-25% lift, and in theory present the higher risk of clutch wear.

Most people who have had off the shelf remaps on Fabia vRS's, myself included, had no clutch issues, as most Fabia drivers tend not to 'dump' the clutch and put it under major stress.

When I sold my fabia vRS it was 180bhp & 300lb/ft, these were from a rolling road. I had never had any issues with this much power/torque ( except when trying to exit a bend and applying accellerator too early :D )

It's Your Choice.

when you say personalised, do you mean the map is customized to how you want the torque to kick in? i.e. when and how much?

by "off the shelf" remaps i'm assuming these are non tunable fixed remaps like superchips?

lol i'd never dump the clutch. not done that in years. :)

i love how she accelerates low down(20-40mph) i think it is and ideally would love to keep that but have the same feeling from 60-80.

oh another question do they always rolling road it before and after its remapped irrespective of whether its something like a superchip or jabbasport?

I ended up with a tuning box from a company in St Albans Herts, called Chip Express. It was simple to install and their customer service has been bloody brilliant. Really nice guys.

The box itself has different user selectable programs ranging from standard with loads of fuel economy up to 185bhp, which is what i currenty use.

As it comes it is set at 160bhp and very good economy, i had no issues with that map. It was only when i went up to 185 that my clutch started to moan :P

A remap should be better than a tuning box. Jabbasport, P-Torque and Richard Washbrook all get very good write-ups. The most extreme remap I have ever encountered was when I tried Wings of Peterborough's SuperChip's equipped car. It only had a gentle power increase but the torque was massively boosted from about 1800RPM and it surged forward at every gearshift, but it was an extreme diesel experience and most people want a longer power delivery rather than shorter.

have heard tuning boxes just add more fuel to it rather than taking into consideration other settings.

angel tuning have quoted me £275 to come and fit it.which seems very reasonable considering a few years ago i spent £1000 on a unichip. they think i'm likely to get 45bhp, 65lb ft torque

maybe worth uprating the clutch before i do it tho

thanks

Sorry about delay to answer your questions:-

Personalised = places like jaba that read the ecu settings and adjust according to your specification, they have been know to smooth out those cars that have the kick @ approx 2100 rpm.

Off the shelf = Yes youre correct - either tuning boxes, or AMD one click, used to be superchips..

Not all mappers will do a before & after R Road, you would have to ask the mapper ( most personalised mappers do).

Hope this answers your question .
