insurance question

Featured Replies

hey all, i changed my car the other day, i was insured with more than and when trying to change my car they said they couldnt insure me on my new car as the ins group was higher than my current car, so i asked for a refund of what i had already paid, roughley £450 and they said instead of giving me a refund they will award me my 4th years NCB now, i should not receive it until november of this year, can they legally give me a full years NCB when it hasnt even been a years claim free driving

Sounds a bit odd doesn't it?

I don't know legally, but if you've paid for a years insurance and not made any claims then you would have a no claims bonus with that company. You need to work out whether it is financially worth it - also it will be worth checking wen you can apply the NCB to a new insurer as the MoreThan insurance doesn't end until November.

My sister went with an insurance company who offered a yrs NCD after 10 months insurance. I don't understand it but thats what they did!

It's called a NCB accelerator. SWMBO had one when she went from a company car back to her own.

I guess it doesn't really matter. In theory I suppose you could buy a years no claims bonus if you so wish. If you pay for a years insurance and a condition is that you're not allowed to claim on it then you will be guaranteed a full years no claims. It would work out stupidly expensive and would basically be stupid but I think you could do it in theory.

I'm currently on a Bonus accelerator myself after some flood damage dropped me back to one years no claims in 2007. Every ten months I get a years ncb. Back up to four years already!

To be honest if another insurance company will give you written proof then I wouldn't worry about it. I got 2 years free insurance with my first car and when it renewed they doubled it to 4yrs because I decided to stay with them and at the end of the 3rd year they gave me proof of 4yrs which my next insurance company was quite happy with.

There is no such thing as legal NCB. NCB is offered by the insurance cos. and is transferreble between other Ins. cos. In most circumstances each Ins.co. will honour your accrued NCB but there is no legal issue covering NCB's. In my case Tesco ins. gave me 5yrs NCB, providing I stay with them for 1year, on my 2nd car even though my 18yr. old daughter is a named driver.

So to cap it all NCB is not covered by any laws, only the good will of the insurance industry. Think of it as a loyalty bonus.

Basically you pay 12 months premium, but it's only a 10 month policy so you rack up NCB quicker. Usually to a max of 3 years.
