What's this . . . . .?

Featured Replies

OK guys & gals, anyone know what the spring in the photo is? It was in the drivers footwell the morning after SWMBO moved the car to get the dustbin out, she's a short a$%e and I'm a lanky git so she moved the seat.

And more importantly how do I put it back?

Return spring from one of the pedals?

I'm thinking something from under the seat. That holds the material etc on.

Thanks guys, I'm with the latter though, I'm assuming it's something in the seat mech just not sure what

And sorry, I should have given a sense of scale . . . . it's 26cm long, and it's a fairly strong spring so think it does more than hold material in place.

Thoughts?

I found one under mine about 4 years ago, chucked it in the bin

99% sure it was from the seat, along with some broken plastic that i think the curve ends lock into

The only thing I did notice was that I get the odd creak from the seat during heavy cornering, and that the lever to raise/lower the seat became a bit stiffer to use.....

Hi sdwilliams72,

I like your solution for this problem here, it is so funny and gave me a laugh early this day.

It is maybe that the lady needs to loose weight to save more of the problems with the seat here. (only joke no offence)

This exact spring snapped from under my seat while i was driving last year, I sh** myself at the time too as it was a really loud snap/bang sound.

Come to think of it, I dont know what i did with mine.

As said above only problem is height adjustment being stiff

Yeah, it was like a gun going off, lol, had a quick look at trying to put it back on, but like I said, the plastic bits that it slotted into had snapped off.

Found mine under the seat when i got the car, kept the spring just in case, one day i might even see if i can work out where it came from and what it does. Seat still working fine so no hurry at the moment.

I posted the exact same thing ages ago - never did find a home for it or notice any difference. They seem to attach under the seat but do very little.

This gets asked all the time - it is part of the seat adjustment mechanism. There is one spring either side of the seat and it 'seems' to continue working OK with just one left.

Hi guys its for the height adjuster, returns the ratchet mechanism.

mine also broke, so i took my seat out and found where it connects had broken off too, nice

i cant see em just popping off so maybe everyones are broken too?

Thanks guys, height adjustment may be stiffer, not sure don't use it much. Guess I'll leave it if others had the same thing happen without any problems.

Cheers for the advice

It 'helps' the seat to move up against the weight of the occupant. One end goes through a small cast lug that is pressed into the seat base; the other end hooks round a cutout in the front of the seat.

On my car the lug broke. It looks pretty feeble, so I'm guessing this is what happened to others as well. I got round it by drilling a hole where the lug was & refitted it.
