Rear tyre noise

Featured Replies

Hi, I am driving a 2007 Octavia II VRS diesel and have noticed a throbbing noise coming from the rear tyres which is directly related to speed. I metioned this when the car had its 20,000 mile service last week, and was told the tyres are deformed but they were still safe to use. The tyres are Low Profile Dunlop 225/40ZR18 and still have 4mm of tread left.

Has anyone experienced this. Apart from fitting new tyres is there a solution and what could be the reason for it?

Most likely feathering. My nearside rear has this problem. Sounds like you need a geometric alignment.

welcome

I'm thinking saw-toothing, aka feathering. A search will turn up lots on this.

If the tyres aren't directional, swap them side to side. If they are, you can make it a bit better by swapping fronts and rears.

Tyres getting out of shape from the rear camber angle. I was experienceing this and was advised about lazer alignment and geometry settings....the works...

I said no, took off the rears and the insides were more worn than the restas well as a very slight "wave" in the tyre from going out of shape, hench the reverberating sound in the cabin that is remarkably like a bearing on its way out !!

Just for a laugh, swap the front and rear tyres, assuming you havn't done already in the past to get even tyre wear, and take her for a spin.. You sound notice a marked decrease in road noise from the tyres!!

Hello and welcome. Yep does sound like the rear camber angles are out, full geometry check needed. I had the same issue on mine, noticed when I took them off to fix the rear mud flap and the inside edges were nearly slick. I got the full set up done through my local dealer (they used a local bodyshop) and cost about £70 + VAT.
