i thought the turbo off a pd150 would fit but may have to uprade injectors. So maybe not a direct swap. Maybe pipework. And the ecu would need to cope with the change(i think)

Alternatively TurboDynamics do some stage 1 or hybrid turbo but i dont know anything about it.

no need. you made and issue from a person abriviating 1 word. why?

yeah pd150 you need to rotate it though i believe....

turbo dynamics offer a pd150 with hybrid parts in 2 stages.. on is good for 220bhp the other 240+ i believe...

you can also hybrid your standard kkk turbo to around 200bhp which alex has done i believe??

or get a daddy from allard

Fair play, that was a good post :D

Nip over to the Fiat Punto forum, you will have a field day!

simbo99 -> funny!!

I am glad it is not just me who finds text speak annoying when used outside of a mobile phone.

thx

lol

me?

Read it again, there were several needless abbreviations / text speak.

Chances are the op is sat at a computer with a proper keyboard so could quite easily type out proper words. Regardless...

Lots of people who may be able to help, simply can't be bothered putting in the effort to help. After all, why should they if the op couldn't be bothered to make his post more readable in the first place?

I don't expect you to agree but hope that's answered your question. Feel free to have the last word. :)

op...??

Original poster (thread starter)

I heard the PD150 Turbo would actually go straight on with no further parts required? But would spin up a little higher on the revs due to it's slightly larger size?

im not to worried if it takes longer to spin as long as when it does it gives alot more boost so i dont have to push the revs up to almost redline each time to get a decent amount of speed up also when im sat on the motorway im constantly sat just below where the turbo cuts in anyway so by time i pushed the peddle down to overtake somethin the speed has suddenly grown and no need for that

if i had a bigger turbo which span later then i could just happily drive it down the motorway in 5th ive found that it tends to do better on fuel anyway then when im drivin in 6th gear

Is this your first TDi or 6 speed? The vRS was both of those for me.. took me a little while to get used to it's power characteristics coming from a 1.4 petrol.

Sounds like you should be changing gear more often tbh, to a more suitable cog for the conditions.

If you are then I'm not sure, but I'm not convinced a new turbo will fix your problems, but could be wrong.

Yeah, just change gear more...

You do realise that if you change the turbo from stock, then you will have to change the ECU mapping. And if you're going to do that, you might as well stick with what you've got and just have your existing setup remapped to give you more power. There's a bit more to the induction on the PD130 in a vRS than say on the XUD in a dTurbo, y'know! ;):D

i use all gears right up to the redline but when cruising down the motorway ive found its much better on mpg in 5th gear at bout 70-80 then it is in 6th gear

this is not my first 6 speed car this is my second n also bout my 4th diesel ive had 15 cars in total so far in the past 3 yrs

Like I said, I've not had the vRS all that long myself, but (in mine at least) there never seems much point in hitting the red line, the power gets all thin as the torque drops off. I've found it's best to try and keep it in the power band.

But, that's just me in mine, everyone's different :)

No point redlining it. Shift up sooner. Basically if it's not remapped it will perform best between about 2k and 4k rpm. It will pull from practically tickover, but you have to be careful not to shake the DMF apart. Similarly, it will rev past 4k, but the torque really falls away.

I've been driving VW Group TDIs for more than 10 years now, and had to adjust my driving style to get best MPG and performance.

I'm very surprised you get better MPG in 5th at that speed. At 50-60 I'd be less surprised.

I found at any sort of motorway speeds (i.e: above 60) sixth gear was plenty good enough to leave most of the traffic behind with just a squeeze of the pedal.

I couldn't agree more......

scooter188's vRS is an 03 Fabia model though, Would I be right in thinking this has a longer 6th gear than the 04 onwards vRS when they revised the ratio's?

Purhaps 6th gear was originally a VW "autobahn" cog for speeds more up in the 90's, so no push around 70?

Scooter, just outta interest.. when was your car registerd? There was a thread on here a couple weeks ago about who had the earliest vRS but I'm sure they were all 53 plate cars? Is yours an 03?

31/10/03 date of first registration

asz engine code

Fair enough, then: you have the 'tall' box, but still you'd be better off changing down whatever power your engine ultimately produces, for the sake of your flywheel...

that why i seem to get better mpg on the motorway in 5th rather then 6th then ?

Could be. Mine had the later gearbox.

that why i seem to get better mpg on the motorway in 5th rather then 6th then ?

Well, Maybe.. I don't really know the technical side of it, just that the early boxes had longer ratio 5th & 6th gears... if you search hard enough I'm sure they're in a post on the forum somewhere from a while ago.

In general though, really no need to take the vRS up to the red line, in normal driving I tend to change at 3k (if not lower).. but that gets higher the more I wanna shift, but never really goes over 4k, no point really... more fun to change gear and play with the torque again. :)

If you've got money to spend on making the car more suited to your self then blag a drive in a 54 or later registered vRS and see if 5th and 6th make more sense... I have no idea if you can do it, what's involved or cost, but maybe a gear box swap to the later unit (if your really unhappy with the motorway performance of the early box) could fix your issues... but is it really that bad? or something you can't change your driving style to match?

I don't know of anyone else ever changing the box out for a later unit though so I recon if ya spent some time with it you'll get used to it.

Depends what speed you cruise at .....

On the long gearing there's no point using 6th before 80mph

I think your looking for a solution to a problem that doesn't really exisit. Your driving it wrong, so perhaps this isn't that car for you. You don't need to go anywhere near the readline to get the best out of it and even with the long box in it you shouldn't have problems overtaking. The turbo should cut in around 17-1800 RPM so that would indicate that 70mph is just below that??? I would also suggest taking a good look at how a VNT works because it's not all about RPM

Either that or there is something wrong with it.
