Depends what speed you cruise at .....

On the long gearing there's no point using 6th before 80mph

Thats exactly what I found in mine (53 plate). Felt a bit laboured at under an indicated 80 in 6th.

Fair enough, then: you have the 'tall' box, but still you'd be better off changing down whatever power your engine ultimately produces, for the sake of your flywheel...

I wondered why my Fabia's gears felt so different to my old Golf PD130 6speed box.

In the Golf you could poodle along at 35mph in 6th.

Reving past 4k is piontless in a non remapped fabia the torque just dissapears he best power band is 2k-4k

I disagree, I think a lot of people are confusing the thrust feeling you get in the small of your back at 2000rpm with power delivery. You do need to rev it the red-line for fastest actual progress. Time it. You might be very surprised.

The vRS is actually not a very quick car. VAG have very cunningly tuned the power/torque delivery to make it feel very fast indeed, but it's not actually any better than a Mondeo with a 2.0l TDi motor.

Isn't the Mondeo engine a very similar output?

You're right, incidentally. I *just* had the edge on one down a sliproad, but only just.

Having done many track miles in one at various states of tune, I can tell you hardly need to go to the redline for the quickest point to point performance, where you will change will vary on the condition but you wont get anything extra out of it or any advantage pushing 5k+ in it. The VRS can be very quick if you know how to drive it. If you don't, your probably better off with a Saxo.

That's rather cynical. I think you will find that the charecteristics of these engines are not specifically engineered to "feel fast"..... more a product of the technology used.
