Gearbox Oil ?

Featured Replies

  • Author
The information I gave was from Skoda Service Manual for 6 speed box. However, oil specs are often updated. I would go with the G052512A 75/90W Synthetic as it has a broader viscosity range.

Strange that different dealers have conflicting information.

yet another part number !?

why do they do so many !............im now seriously confused and the manual has no reference at all about the gearbox oil so thats no help

Lummox, are you saying the G052157A2 is for 5 spd boxes ?.......because thats the part number you listed ?

Moggy does it not list specific oils for each box ?.........mines the HDS box im told, also where has this new part number come from, is there anything online i can read ?

my mate had serious issues with the 5spd box on his Golf, so im not about to put the wrong oil in, the VAG boxes dont seem very good so i want to do all i can to make sure everything is right, this is all getting a bit mad seeing as i only want to buy some in case it needs topping up at the service, but ive also read that GL4 and GL5 oils dont mix so even for a top up it needs to be right

it shouldnt be this hard !

I'd guess that VAG have taken the decision not to make referance to, in the owner's manual manual, to gearbox types as there are too many. The engine oil receives more attention as it needs "attending to" weekly by the owner. Personally, I just tend to go along to the correct marque VAG dealer's parts place and hand over the VIN and/or the registration number - and they can sort it out from there and sell you the correct oil.

Editted:-- sorry, I had not re-read all the replies, so it seems that you need to trot along to 10 dealers, fill in a spread-sheet, spin round 5.5 times and read off the first number you see - surely that is not what you are finding out - that sounds a bit concerning!

No sorry it was G060726A2 I had listed for the five speed boxes, not the number I listed.

But anyhow I had some gear selection issues on my six speeder in the estate, I swapped the oil to the 70W oil usually advised for the 5 speeds and low and behold the issue was resolved.

aha, so the number i was given by Preston, G060726A, is for 5 speed boxes, so therefore incorrect

i did give them my reg, and told him it was a 6 speed box aswell

to confuse matters further, ive just checked our Autodata at work, which says 75W-90 G 052 171

even for an OE product the G052157A2 is expensive, but if its right ill pay it

that sounds a bit concerning!

it is concerning, I know ours at work isnt just a listed grade, its a certain Elf product, but its not that hard to understand and im 100% certain I can advise people on the correct product to use for there car 100% of the time, though I do work in parts and I can understand sometimes things are not that simple lol

its a bit silly really that I might not even need this oil, its being bought as a precaution as the small print of my warranty says I must have a service done within 6 months of buying the car and the box oil must be checked and obviously topped up if needed

TBH when I used to rebuild the 02M gearboxes at Audi we put 10W40 in them as that worked in the syncros better and gave smoother shifting, never had one come back with any issues.

so are we agreed G052157A2 is the correct fluid for my box ?

Its what I have on my ETKA and what I printed out.

just get some castrol 75w90 from halfrauds , that will do for topping up

ordered some OE stuff now

so are we agreed G052157A2 is the correct fluid for my box ?

Would this be safe to use on my 04 plate 6 speed box or do I have to check at my dealer first?

i would normally say always check but the dealers seem just as confused by it as its confused me, ive decided on the advice of both my local TPS who have always been really good, and Lummox too who also listed the same product my for box

its majorally confused me to!

so is G052157A2 the 75w90 fully synthetic or 70w90?

think am gona phone my dealer and an independent auto shop

How can you get confused?

Ive actually shown the ETKA page with the part number and the grade on it, its there in black and white.

  • 3 years later...

Sorry to bring this topic up again, however having some trouble finding the right oil after ringing the main dealers and reading the threads...

Skoda/TPS - quoted £100 for 2.5litres of 'G052512A' 75/90w type oil, supposidly recommended?

However read threads saying you can use 'G060726A2' oil from Skoda, which is £6/litre?

Eurocar parts - quoted £5/litre for 75/90w that they recommend?

Or Opie Oils - recommended Millers 75/80w at £10/litre?

Which is best? Is the cheapest Skoda stuff ok to use or for a 5 speed box and no good? There is no way ill be paying a ton for g/box oil, so which is the best to go for please ladies/gents?

Any help would be much appreciated, wanted to get this sorted this weekend hopefully....

Thanks

Danny

Hey I changed my gear oil the other week.

The dealer told me I needed G060726A2 you mention above.

I'm not so sure now after doing some reading around and my gearbox has since broken completely but that also may be down to other problems I had prior to the change.

Phil

just ordered the OEM oil from local dealer, not to happy with cost but dealer going to do something with price when it comes in, (have had trade rate given to me before on pricy parts)

one thing, dealers do not seem to carry the oil, and it is on back order from skoda, 3 day lead time as they said it was classed as hazardous and could not be shipped overnight

so if you do need the real gear order in time

Hmmm.

Sounds like I was given the wrong oil as they carried it in stock and was £5 odd +VAT.

Anyone know if this could have caused damage using the wrong oil?

Phil

Thanks for getting back Phil/bluecar, sounds like the expensive stuff is the one we need to go for then, but @ £100 for 2.5litres - if it's apparently lifetime box oil so ill just leave it as is! Unless anyone can recommend a decent replacement that is a reasonable price and is proven to work ok??

Seems strange yours has broken though Phil, after putting in the cheaper stuff - as surely oil is oil and can't see how a different grade of oil could cause your box to break?! Could understand not working to its full potential and perhaps being notchy and stiff to engage but maybe i'm wrong....

Anymore help would still be much appreciated.

Cheers

Dan

a minor point, i was quoted £22+vat for 1/2 ltr

but when it turned up it was in 1ltr bottles so £57 for 2 ltrs, so silver plated not gold :)
