Help!! Am I Going Mad?!

Featured Replies

Basically I've not driven the Vrs for a while ( 3 days ) because ive had exam's etc.. Anyway, Ive just got in from a "spirited" drive to asda and back and when the car was rolling at speed (i.e no accleration) i thought i could hear a strange whinning noise?!

Anyone got any clue what this could be, bearings?

Cheers Guys!

Dan

No, i dont think its getting louder when im turning, its just really loud road noise like whinning, don't really know what it could be?

How many miles has it done?

Any Ideas? :(

Is the sound coming from the front or the rear of the car? Which side? It might be easier to find out if you get a friend and he gets in the back and tries to locate the sound. Does the sound change during acceleration/braking? Does slight veering to left/right change it? Really high pitched sound or slightly lower?

I think its the front drivers sound, seems to only make the noise when travelling at speed, but not under accleration?! cant hear any noise when turning either, its not particulary loud, ive just noticed it... Its like a whine when the car is rolling?!

Its really starting to bug me!

Anywhere i should look in particular?

Dan

If it's more noticeable under deceleration, and changes pitch with speed, then my guess would be wheel bearing. Noise is worse when the offending wheel gets more weight on it, so under acceleration, the noise is not as noticeable. Mine gave these symptoms at 75k miles.

What's the damage on a new wheel bearing (excuse me im still young to Skoda's!)

Can you test the same way as older golfs by jacking it up and giving it a wiggle?

Yes but depending on how it's gone, it might not wiggle at all. Mine didn't and it was still shot pretty well.

how much am i looking to pay for a Skoda Dealer to fix a wheel bearing then? any clues guys?

Thanks

Dan

a lot of money lol

150 pos?

billy

Yea it's probably gonna be pretty expensive at the dealer. I had mine done in an independent garage with parts I had sourced my self. Probably saved 50%.

Edit: For a front wheel bearing I paid 34€ and it was ~1h job. So total was something around 85€.

Ah.... I'm going wait till im convinced its the wheel bearing then!!!

If it's like mine, the noise gets worse pretty quickly. From barely noticeable to badly worn (according to mechanic) in under 1 week. That said, during that week there was about 400 miles put on it. Don't let it get too bad, as the mechanic I went to said the hub can get damaged if left too long, and then the costs go through the roof.

Koolio, I'll keep my eyes on it then!

Thanks for the heads up!!
