PC problem - I'm confused!

Featured Replies

I know, some would say it doesn't take much ;)

I have a friend's system here, Athlon64 based, socket AM2 type on an Asus M2N board. The original power supply was knackered (giving off 'that smell' like burning clutch/brake pads!) and was firing the PC for a couple of seconds, then dying. I originally built the machine for him, around 3yrs ago I think and put it down to a slightly duff/weak supply.

So I stuck a new, larger power PSU in that I had available (OCZ 500 or 600w model, original was an Antec 350w). But to no avail. Nothing, nada, siltch! Rear power switch lights, as it should do on these OCZs and the power light on the 'board goes green too.

I've tried it with all components bar CPU & heatsink disconnected, but still the same. And I don't have any other AM2s to try on the board, to try and rule that out. I'm not really inclined to go and buy one just on the off-chance either.

Any ideas welcome people :)

Thanks,

Steve

The other power supply when it blew, may have taken the motherboard to heaven with it. Or the replacement psu is duff. Can you try it in another pc.

Sounds like it to me....trouble is if the MB has blown it may take out whatevere you plug into it as well :o

I would also go for the motherboard. I had a similar situation last year when I plugged the camera into a front usb, the pc switched off never to start. I suspected the psu, which I replaced, still no go. On inspection I found the usb port was shorting out, I unplugged the front usb ports, but still no go. Tested the psu in another pc & it worked OK.

Final solution new motherboard. I bit the bullet and built a new tower.

Almost certainly the motherboard.

Thanks guys. Not yet been able to check the new PSU in another box, will try to do that later.

Was also hesitant in trying a brand new CPU in there, for the reasons voiced above. The fact I was getting some life from the board, in that it was recognising connected power did seem positive, but also could be a red herring!

Could be new board and processor time for him then!

Thanks,

Steve

do you want me to sort it for you steve?

its broke , hit it with something heavy , if that doesnt work its electrical , probably a valve then

Yep, might as well break it properly hey!

If you say that the power light on the board works when you power up, then the motherboard is possibly ok as usually there's a full circuit loop performed rather than simply connecting the light directly to the power input.

I guess the manual can help. Also possible that you've fried the CPU.

ha , only trying to help .

its a valve mate , they blow if they get hot , well known fault is that:rofl:

apparently you can get some new fangled transistor thingy nowadays

Which ATX version is the old power supply and the new one?

Also if you short the green pin to one of the grounds (either next to it) with a bridging wire does the new power supply power up?

If this powers the supply up, try doing similarly from behind the supply, connect it to the mobo and then apply power and see if the board boots up or not.

I wouldn't write off the mobo just yet.
