Will an 18" Zenith fit my spare wheel well?

Featured Replies

My Octavia Vrs has 4 x 18" Zeniths with Michelin Pilot Exaltos. The spare is a 16" steel with a Bridgestone Turanza ER 300 205/55R 16 (is this a run-flat?).

I intend to purchase another 18" Zenith and fit another Exalto. Will it fit my spare wheel well?

Also, does any one have any suggestions as to how I can sell the steel wheel and the Bridgestone. How much are they worth?

Not quite sure why you'd want to do this, as the current spare is more than adequate. It's not a runflat and I feel quite lucky that I still have a car with a proper spare wheel, should the need arise.

There's also no issue running this 16 with 3 other 18s. Yes, handling will be compromised somewhat, but the rolling radius of a 205/55/16 will be within acceptable tolerance of the other 225/40/18s.

The 18" is only 0.2" larger in OD, so I guess it'll fit, but it'll sit a bit (25mm) higher in the footwell.

Same as wot he said. why do it? I've only rarely used my spare and then exactly for that; as a spare. The 205/55/16 is at least a full size wheel/tyre and perfectly good and safe to use.

18's will fit in the wheel well.

Providing its a 225/40/R18, had to put my spare in the spare wheel well after having a puncture.

Thanks for that. Does that mean that the boot floor would have a bump in the middle?

Yes; likely it will as the 225/40 18 is wider (therefore taller when laid on its side) than the 205/55 16 'spare'.

i've got a full size alloy spare in my passat and the wheel well appears identical in size to that of my vRS, if in doubt, whip a wheel off and try it

You'd also have to put the wheel in face down which will scratch the alloy to bits. Why would you want to do that?

I never did, i put it in face up and left the foam insert in the rear footwell.

Or you could do what vauxhall does and put a thin piece of noise insulation/carpet in the bottom of the wheel well.

I did find the spare sat in 1" of water though when i came to take it out from a previous leak.

my spare never gets scratched, full size alloy, fixes the same as the vRS, same wheel well

Throw a bit of 1" timber or an inch of padding/carboard, etc on top of the existing spare & see what happens.

If it works then sell the old wheel here at Briskoda or on eBay.
