We usually run the engine with the cap off the expansion tank for a while, varying the revs. Top them up, re-fit the cap and let them run until the cooling fan cuts in, with the air conditioning off.

You will see in workshop manuals that they tell you to set the heater to hot. This is for heaters with a water valve, that vary the temperature by adjusting the coolant flow through the heater matrix. The Octavia has an air blending heater, whereby the temperature is adjusted by an air flap, directing the air through the heater matrix (hot), or around it (cold), or a combination of both.

The above is what I do too- in addition it can help if you give the coolant hoses a squeeze while the cap is off.

yeah i would have just said run the car with the coolant cap off, varying the revs etc, then just top up as necessary and keep an eye on the levels over the next few days.

works on my mates rover coupe and we seem to drain that every couple of weeks for one reason or another

but the rover coupe has a bleed nut on the metal coolant pipe:cool:

Isn't there a bleed screw on the radiator? And/or the heater matrix pipe?

I'm a master at this on my S2 and it consists of unscrewing the expansion tank from it's mounting point and raising it as high as possible, opening both bleed screws and pouring the coolant in. Listen to the lovely hissing sound and close the bleed screws when you have coolant coming out of both of them. Then run the engine to temperature and let the fan come on. Reopen the bleed screws and make sure you get plenty of coolant past them and hey presto you're done.

just run the car with the expansion cap off untill the rad has cut in a few times and all the airs out the system, just top it up when the fan cuts in, bettere to have the heaters on so it circulates, then put the cap on when the levels sitting right and its calmed down,

yeah i know the jobbie, weve just never used it for some reason

No air bleeds required as the return to the header tank is the highest point of the system, they dont air lock.
