Which Oil Type

Featured Replies

As my car is getting on a bit (like me) I have decided to carry out all the servicing myself.

The car was put onto fixed servicing a couple of years ago instead of the variable servicing.

i just like peoples opions on which oil to use in my octy vrs mk1 which has been remapped.

Also suggestions on other service items such as sparkplugs etc.

What do people use and where to buy them from.

cheers

My car is on fixed servicing but I use Castrol Edge 5w 30 which is a long life oil for variable service schedules.

I use long life as I like the reassurance that my oil has plenty of life left when it's changed.

I always use Opie oils as being a briskoda member it is far cheaper buying it as a service pack than I could ever get on the high street.

I just recieved my service pack today actually. 5 litres Castrol Edge and a filter 42 quid delivered compared to about 65 quid from Halfords :D

I use Quantum long life which is VAG brand from TPS - I got 5l of 5w 30, filter, sump plug, air filer and pollen filter for £44. However if the #castrol edge is that cheap from Opie I may order from there next time. The spark plugs only need done every 40k I think.

I used the standard life oil in mine this time having gone off variable servicing. I'd covered 10k whilst it was on variable with long life oil over a year and it ate a whole litre in that time. Since going onto standard semi synth it hasn't used a drop!

JohnRS is right about the 40k but there are apparently benifits to doing them every 20k.

I'd definetly recomend the air filter as it take 5 minutes to do, i think this made the biggest difference in mine after 20k so its probably worth doing every 10k or at least giving it a good clean, you can pick them up for about a tenner.
