Tuning the GReddy boost controller

Featured Replies

Hello.

I have Octavia vRS 04' with:

turbo: K03S (standard)

intercooler: standard (for now, next week will have the front cooler)

remmaping: upsolute

silicon inlet

free flow exhaust 2.75"

greddy profec b spec 2 boost controller

can anyone help me with the tunning of the boost controller ?

now the setup of the boost is:

SET GAIN: 1.44 (bar)

GAIN: 12%

SET: 86%

WARNING: 1.80

LIMITER: 6%

with this setup i feel surging in the 2nd gear on 3000rpm and on the 3rd gear over 5700rpm

Thanks.

You'll be lucky to find anyone on here who has one of those, most of the remapped Octys just have a remap and no seperate boost controller. Des's car has a boost controller but not sure if it's a GReddy one.

why run a boost controller in the first place if the map is good you wont need one:rolleyes:

but no i cant help as ive never seen the need for one on a k03s turbo... would only use one if i went bt and ran different managment

so in the long shot get a good map on it and take the boost controller off:thumbup:

we dont have a lot of choise with the remmaping in here...

also without the boost controller the boost fall to 0.85 bar on 6000 rpm from 1.5 bar on 3000rpm on the 3rd gear or the 4rd gear.

we have here only the upsolute remmaping or custom remmaping that some guys do at home that not always better than the upsolute.

It might be worth having a look on some of the Jap car forums to see how they set up their GReddy controllers. The guys on there may have completely different engines to the 1.8 Turbo but they should be able to explain what the different settings on the controller do.

The boost figures you've quoted sound quite high, it's possible with high levels of boost the N75 valve has got knackered and so isn't controlling the boost delivery as it should be. Try a search on here for "N75" and "Surging".

If you lower the boost is it better, thats a lot of pressure!

Out of interest how is it plumbed in? have you got the N75 still connected electrically?

Also do you get a jerky drive when driving steadily off boost? Cheers

if i remember right the 'set gain' is the pressure that the wastegate starts to open. as it is so high it will give you massive boost spike as it then tries to level off to 'set' (desired boost pressure) 86% of the turbos capacity. the gain is then how responsive the controller is. higher is not necessarely better.

from what i remember of doing mine, play with the set to get your desired boost pressure then turn the set gain up until it starts to spike then turn it down a tad. then play with the gain level to adjust tail off or boost increase at the higher end of the rev range.

i would turn the set gain down to around 0.7 - 0.8 to start with and the gain to around the middle of its range.

i would also probably get the warning down to around 1.3 bar so that you will set the alarm off with the boost spike. then you know when to turn it down.

hope that helps

he would need to leave the n75 valve 'wired in' so that it does not bring up the engine check light.

the boost controller will then 'plumb' in place off it rendering completly usless.

just hope the hole in the intake pipe is blocked and the boost controller is plumbed in the right way round as it has different out puts for the internal and external wastegate setups.

Cheers Andy. So is it like a manual boost controller, jerky when driving gently?

no its an electronic one which regulates the pressure rather than continuously bleeding off the pressure like those cheap mechanical things that you have to keep adjusting from under the bonnet or where ever you mount it.

they are really smooth once they are set up correctly. my boost graph was very smooth with just a small drop at the top end. needless to say ive adjusted it. lol

The n75 is still wired but connected to it self:

I did some checking yesterday and the surge at the end of the 3rd gear is because of the warm air,

when i cool the system for a while there is no surge.

I also tried to lower the boost or the gain or the set, the car is less power.

And if I raise one of them there is a bigger surge.

Next week I will mount the front cooler and will check again.

Thank you for your help...

Your boost controller will require a boost reading from somewhere, where are you taking this from? A bad boost reading will not let your boost controller run properly.

Your KO3s will not run boost levels of 1.4bar right up to the red line, it will just not keep up with revs. Try running the boost at, no gain, 1.2bar at 3000rpm dropping back to 1bar at 5500rpm. This way should not get any boost spike and the car will pull harder at higher revs right to the red line.

Let us know how you get on.

Last week I mounted the front cooler :)

the surge on the end of the 3rd disappeared, but i still have a little surge on 2000rpm.

the boost controller reads the boost from the same place as the boost gauge, it reads it correctly as far as i know. i also had a boost leaks from the DV.

the boost now is 1.5 bar at 3000rpm dropping to 1.1 bar at 6000rpm.

i had my boost tunned as good as i could, for now i am standing with stock evo 9. (60kmh-220kmh)

Anybody knows if i can make it go better or it is the maximum ?

Thanks.

The Greddy controllers are a pain in the butt , bear in mind none of the settings relate to boost values but to percentages over actuator pressure so your set gain of 145 is not 1.45bar !!

This thread may be useful i used this to set up the profec B on my Skyline but you will always be playing with it , the settings and boost level will alter from a hot to cold day , its a dumb controller and cant adapt

Thanks for the link, i had already read it about a month ago.

It really helped me a lot but there are some thing that are not accurate, i cant set the gain to 0% i also cant set the limiter set to more than 25% and some more...

Yeah i know its not perfect but its the best out there i'm afraid , the instructions are terrible as well

I thought i had a problem with mine and and bought a Gizzmo one to replace it , now they are an awesome boost controller and very easy to set up , my advice would be sell the profec b on ebay and buy one , you wont regret it

how does the gizzmo is better ?

i just never heard of gizzmo...

never seen them too.

and also i dont know what is the best that i can get out of my car with the standard turbo.

I know Rich is into modded Japs as well. All I can say is that I'd try the Jap fora too. I can't offer a hotlink, but I've always found the Toyota Supra IV guys to be knowledgable and friendly.
