TDI advice

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just a couple of things I wanted to ask about my Octavia tdi 110.

1) I wanted to find out peoples' opinion on what difference the remap to their tdi 110 has made? My car has now done about 103000 miles - should this be of a concern when looking at a remap? Should i be looking to get a new clutch done at the same time - if so what sort of price would i be looking at?

2) I know many people have spoken about the Koni FSD's on here before, I want to lower the car a bit - (it does seem to wallow at times), without compromising ride quality. What sort of set up should i be looking at and at what price would i be looking at to have this done?

3) I have seen on here that to upgrade the brakes on the octy to 312 is a bit of a mission and expensive. Is there a more cost effective way to have a better stopping power without breaking the bank? What sort of price again?

4) My muffler seems to be keeping loads of noise every now and again (Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesnt!). Sounds like a rattling sound inside the muffler. Keeping in the remaping theme, what are my options on exhaust upgrades that are fairly cost effective?

Thanks

Cawmere :)

I wouldn't be worried about remapping at this point, my tdi was remapped at around 80k and is now upto 123k and I've had NO engine/turbo related problems. If you haven't had your clutch changed make sure you budget for a replacement just incase you enjoy the extra torque a little too much but I wouldn't go replacing it until you need to.

Cant help on the Koni FSD front, I've gone down the KW spring and Damper route, while this is much cheaper than the FSD's I would imagine the ride is much firmer and not to everones taste.

Agreed, For you to upgrade to 312mm I think you will also need to change your hubs/calipers although I could be wrong. Drop into the Awesome GTI Sub Forum, they are currently running an offer on Zero Sixty Drilled & Grooved discs which will be a more cost effective option for better braking on a budget.

All depends on what your after, Myself and Awesome are currently trying out a Miltek Discreet system on my TDI which is designed for a Bora as I didn't want to have my rear bumper cut, while the system fitted perfectly the exhaust does knock on the rear beam due to the larger bore of the exhaust over standard and the fact the car is lowered. In all honesty if I had to replace my exhaust system again I would keep with the OEM system but get the CAT cut out.

Hope this helps

Hi,

Thanks for the reply  - what suspension set up do you have currently then, and how much did it cost you? Just trying to get an idea on how much I should be looking to pay to have the car lowered.

I checked the Awesome section as you advised, will find out the cost of the brake discs and pads.

Thanks for your help,

Cawmere

I've gone for the KW Sport Spring and Damper Setup, The whole cost at the time was around the £700 mark which was the purchase and the fitting of the kit from JBS Auto Designs in Chesterfield but in that price I also had them fit Powerflex Front ARB Bushes, Powerflex Front and Rear Wishbone Bushes, Dog Bone Mount and a full Geometry Setup too.

At the time I had to replace both rear dampers as they were both leaking oil and the car felt quite soft/wallowy/unstable at motorway speeds (I had gone from a Mk1 Octavia vRS though which has quite firm suspension) so I took the plunge to replace the whole suspension setup. I went out in DaveH's Octavia 1.8t 4x4 as he had the KW V1 Coilovers fitted and liked the idea of being able to change the ride height (lower when doing the normal everyday driving and raised slightly when loading up to go on holiday with the wife & kids etc) but the cheapest I could find fully fitted was over the £1k mark and I couldn't justify that kind of cost so settled for the Sport Spring and Damper kit which feels very similar to the KW V1 coilovers but without the extra cost or the ability to lower or raise the ride height.

My concerns with the ride hide weren't justified until earlier this year when we went abroad and caught the underneath of the car on some rather rough French country roads and knocked my geometry out causing my 2 front tyres to wear quicker on their inside edges. Other than that the kit has performed well and I am happy with the choice I made.

The ride is quite firm and there is little body roll, most of the people who have been out in it agree that the ride is quite nice although none of them have had to endure the Sheffield road system which at times does shake you about alot.

ps. Don't fit the Powerflex dog bone bush, although they do get softer with time they are not for the tdi engine and will continue to shake the car, if you decide to change it the Super Pro Dog Bone Mount is perfect.

Rough guide on what I have done can be found here although dates/milages are not correct.

A few more pictures on what I've done can be found here

Thanks for that, how highly do you rate the koni sports kit? I was looking at those also.

Let me know what you think.

I honestly couldn't say, I've never been in a car with a Koni setup. From what I have heard Koni are one of the tops makes, The people who uprate their MK2 Octavia's suspension seem togo the Koni FSD route rather than any other but more than that I'm afraid I can't help.

If your around the West/South/North Yorkshire area your more than welcome to have a ride out in my car and judge for yourself what you think of the KW setup but don't forget I have also uprated all my suspension bushes which will also help to firm up the ride.

Matt did you get the shocks changed under warranty?

Matt did you get the shocks changed under warranty?

They are still being investigated. KW Germany have accepted thay they were leaking but assure me there is nothing wrong with them, However KW UK are still pushing for a Warranty code so I can get my refund on the new dampers I had to purchase as it was into the 2nd year of the warranty when they started to leak.
