Timing Chain

Featured Replies

Hi all, can anyone assist me, was told there`s a timing chain on the car, and I think it needs tighting up as a noise like a loose chain seems to be comming from under the bonnet, stupid prices being quoted to leave it into garage, as they`ll try and find other money extracting faults under there, if any pictures available on how to tackle the job will get hubby to sorry (persuade) to do it , as he`s pretty handy with a spanner. Thank you.

Playing around with your timing belt or chain isn't something you want D.I.Y. If you don't tighten it up exactly right it will either come off or snap(not good). You'll end up with a huge bill to fix the engine, alot more than getting a garage to sort it to start with )

Is it an early Fabia? I think these have a bored out felicia engine in but didn't think they had the same chain as the felly.

It is a diyable job but isn't the easiest to undertake and great care needs to be taken that nothing is moved while the belt/chain is off otherwise you can damage the internals of the engine when its started again.

Should be able to grab a Haynes for that car and it will give you a giude on how to do it (although take it with a pinch of salt as they often leave things out or add in steps not needed).

Needs more info to identify exactly which engine you have:-

Start with year and month of first registration, and whether it's an 8 or 16 valve unit.

thanks , it`s a 2001 14mpi, and it sounds like a chain rattling againist something , which i thought was causing the noise.it is also losing water not vast amounts but enough to have to fill the bottle abouit once a fortnight.

Think the earlier 1.4's suffered from coolant leaks etc.

Check all hoses and also check for oil in the coolant and 'mayo' under the oil filler cap!

I suspect that to be the 8 valve engine then which is basically a 1.3 felly/fav engine bored out to 1.4.

It will be a chain on left hand side of the engine (when looking straight on at the car) at the bottom.

It can't be tightened as far as I am aware and would have to be replaced all together although I doubt it will be in danger of breaking (depending on the mileage and use of the car)

The leak is likely to be from the cooling fan thermo switch on the passenger side of the radiator. Tightening it usually helps.

With this, as with all modern cars the ignition timing is controlled ny the ECU. You could try cleaning the throttle body.
