These sort of policies have been around as bolt-ons for some time, but usually with get-outs, such as nominated repairers and demonstrable continuity of insurance following-on from the end of the manufacturers main warranty.

Appears that this policy seems to be free floating ( Without a vehicle survey or evidence of a fully manufacturer compliant service history) and lets you choose the repairer, but then Tesco settle directly with the repairer ? How do they keep their business model solvent ?

I suppose there could be a number of things behind this:-

a). The original premiums are well over the top.

B).There will be a lot of haggling if you choose a main dealer as repairer.

c). A significant rise in subsequent years premiums after a claim, or above average

claim.

d).A supposed guarenteed customer profile of predominantly newer vehicles due to

Government scappage scheme.

e). Increasing relaibiliy and durability of newer models

Who knows ?

As we all know, sometimes to our cost, a number of the car insurers who offer budget motor policies, contain their liabilities by reserving the right to specify selection of the reapairers and further, they do discriminate at the front-end between differing risk liabilities by offering different premiums to different customers.

All you can say is, despite the credit crunch, there is still a shed load of money floating around in the City of London looking for a nice warm nest in which to earn above banking rates of return - pity it can't be used to improve the infrastructure. Removing a few potholes would remove some of the raison-d'etre for this.

How's this type of policy going to cope when the Euro legislation restricting servicing and repairs to main dealers comes into force. Doh !

Your last sentence puzzles me as Euro Parliament has recently ended restrictive practices (2years ago) affecting car servicing and The Manufacturers monopoly, cant believe this will be reversed.

The Tesco Finest warranty is extremely well regarded.

Many people on Porsche forums highly rate it and don't have any problems getting claims through.

When it comes to modifications, they cover everything except items fitted as "options" or modifications.

So all of the OEM parts could be covered, it's the modifications that won't be.

My warranty runs out in January next year and I'm seriously considering this.

I hear horror stories of turbo's going on Octy's - that would be covered by the Tesco warranty.

Compared tesco finest to Warranty Direct and found tesco slightly better and haggled more items to be included from warranty direct (emission system etc) which was standard on tesco, and got a dealer repair for the same price as a network repair policy.

Its one of these things that you need to go down the list and tick them all off - pretty boring but essential
