Not a starting issue, but close to it...

Hi Briskodians!

Having a weather like this one, my girlfriend, her brother and I hitted the Irish countryside, Dingle to be exact. Close to destination, the car started to not behaving as usual. The revs were weird, like choking at hight revs (3000-3500rpm), but not like running on 3 cylinders. So, I decided to stop the car somewhere possible, off the road. Since then, the car did not wanted to keep the revs, or revving correctly after being started.

I did check having fuel, coolant, oil, sparks and air, but nothing did the trick.

So, the car can start great, then (3-5 secs later) starts choking until death.

What I noticed it if I press a bit the gas pedal and release it quickly, the revs were going up, and I could reach 3000ish rpm like that, but nothing driveable at all. Sounds like a bad mixture, like not enough gas... Or air...

I'm now waiting to organize the tow-away trip to get it back home and doing some more checks.

By the time, does anybody knows what is happening..? What I'll do need to check..?

I would say that a sensor broke down, or something like that...

PS : The car stayed there over night, and when I tried to start it this morning, it started correctly, and stayed like that for 30 seconds, and then starts behaving as described earlier.

Try the flywheel sensor

Where is this one located..?

On top of the gearbox. Looks like this but the cylindrical metal bit on the left is hidden in the hole inside the gearbox. Try removing it and cleaning the cylindrical metal bit. It is held on with a bolt through the hole on the bottom.

Errr... Mine isn't metal made, but got a plastic finish... Is it OK..? Should I worried about having lost the metallic cap in the gearbox..? Or else..?

irrespective of that, if you are getting sparks then the crank/flywheel sensor is working ok

I just replaced the coil pack, give it a try, and... Nope...

I can feel a better start, better revving, but it still stalls...

Now, I'm trying to get the lambda probe out of the exhaust manifold...

I'll keep you posted! ;)

So, I successfully took that old lambda probe out, and fitted the new one! Yeah!!!

Give it a try, again... Looks better.

But no quite back to normal. Let me explain :

Now, the car starts, get some revs (around 2000-2500 rpm), then stabilizes to a high idle (1000-1100 rpm) and can stay like that for a minute or two, easily.

But when I start to push the gas pedal, it starts to chock, and dies... Unfortunately.

Questions :

Can the purge valve and/or the charcoal canister could be part of my problem..? (located on top right of the engine bay, next to the battery)

What are they for exactly..? How do they work..? (I'll google it, but if someone's faster... ^^)

If I'm wrong, could someone give me directions..? Things to check..?

Have you tried the temperature sensor? How about disconnecting that and trying it (mounted on the thermostat housing). The ECU should use basic values instead of the ones off the sesnor - its worth a shot.

Just did it.

Weird things happened!

I took off the plug, tried to start the car, and it was worst!

I couldn't start the car, it couldn't reach idle revs.

So I put the plug back, and retried... The car started normally!:confused:

I was able to push the gas pedal, and fell the Felly back to normal!!! :)

I was able to do so for 10 secs, again, it started again... :(

Retried to start it, back to choky mode...

I did this twice, and it worked twice, for 10 secs I could have my car back as it was.

So I decided to let the sensor off the plug for the nite, and see tomorrow.

I replaced the sensor 1 year and few months ago, would you think the sensor's already dead..?
