Octavia 1.9 Diesel - Oil Consumption

Featured Replies

OK, Simple question - What is the oil consumption on the 1.9 Diesel (110 bhp).

The reason for the question is that at 7500miles the oil light on the L&K came on & inspection of the dip stick indicated oil @ the bottom of the stick, topped up & OK.

I must admit to not checking oil on a regular basis on Diesels & all the Oil burners weve had before have not needed top ups between services so is this unusual ??????????

Oh & no obvious signs of drips but will inspect properly in daylight

Stuart

Mine used around a litre over the first 10,000 miles. I got quite paranoid about checking the oil level, as my Skoda dealer told me to keep a close eye on the oil level!

Coming up to the 18,000 mark now and I have put in around a third of a litre since the 10k service. So oil consumption seems to have dropped.

Mines a PD engine, but I think this kind of oil consumption is normal on all diesel engines when they are fairly new. I dont think you've got too much to worry about.

Now all I have to worry about is that the dealer sells me the correct grade of oil for my car!

Stuart,

A friend of mine has a 110 TDI in an Octavia that is pre facelift with 10,000 servicing he has no need to top up between servicing. On another board someone with the variable service 110TDI has a similar consumption to yours - it may be the longlife oil being thinner that causes the higher consumption just a guess-The handbook shows a figure thats considered normal is your consumption within this? - If its pretty high you could ask the garage to do a compression test on the cylinders - this was suggested in a question in Auto Express this week by a non Skoda Driver with high oil consumption.

Thanks for responses, I am now a bit more reasured. I will have a good look at the car when Wendy gets back from up-north on Friday for leaks but as there have been no drips on the drive I dont expect to find anything. Had to add "ordinary" diesel oil to the longlife but have been told by a dealer this is OK, the only downside is the service interval will come earlier. As for whats in the manual re consumption my guess it will be a fairly high figure as with most manufacturers, I can remember Ford used to quote 600 miles to a pint.

Any other figures people are getting would be of interest

Stuart

Havent had a VW group TDI that hasnt needed oil up to 20k miles. But after that they dont touch the stuff in my expierience.

However, I have been told by 2 dealers that you can not put anything other than longlife oil in with longlife oil if you want to keep the variable servicing. Mixing oils then puts you back to 10k services, but not variable thats all.

Cheers

the offical "skoda figures" are a tolerance of 1 litre of oil per 1,000 km's (750 miles) this should reduce with age

Spoke to Skoda, aparently somewhere in the manual it says you can add 1/2 litre of good Oil in an emergency. The only effect will be for the oil sensing bit of the cars brain will sense the oil failing earlier & the "I need a service "light comes on sooner.

I had a momentary panic at about 8k miles when the 'Stop and Top Up' warning came up, and it swallowed a whole litre of the thin stuff before the dipstick was in the correct tolerance according to the manual. As a result made a beeline for Halfords and bought 5 litres, just in case.

However, since then it has only needed little top-ups every so often (now 21k), so seems to have calmed down.

I do mostly motorway miles and I'm intrigued to see how long it will be before the service indicator will come up - anyone have experience beyond 21k??

Stuart,

my previous TDi (110bhp) estate didn't need a top up in 35k miles (in 2years).

Aren't VAG engines in general notorious for using up oil? I know the original 1.8 16v engine was quite heavy on it's oil consumption.

Cheers.

Adrian.

Firstly , welcome to Briskoda! 2nd , is your car a TDi or 1.8T L&K? I have a vRS and my car only done 13100 (mostly stop start town miles , admittedly) before the 'Service 1000 miles' legend apeared in the odo.

Thanks for the welcome Duncan!

It's a TDi. I do mostly motorway miles up and down the A1/A1(M) between home and Slough, so I expected the service interval to stretch out a bit. The supplying dealer said that it could go to 25 or even 30k before needing a service, but I think paranoia would get the better of me before then!

Buying the Octavia was one of the best decisions I have made. It's surprisingly quick and yet still regularly returns 55 mpg+.

Cheers,

Howard
