2.8 V6 problems - Mainly electrial

Featured Replies

Hi, new to this forum. Just bought myself a 2.8 V6 Elegance few days ago. Its an 02 plate. The car was used by autocar and autoexpress in a group test when it was new.

I have a few problems with the car. I have a vag com obd 2 lead and a trial software. I am having problems with the reverse sensors on the car. When reverse is selected there is a long BEEP noise but no further noises. I checked the fault codes and says short to ground.

Also the ABS light is on and the traction control light. When I bought the car the engine management light was also on but I removed the fuse and replaced it and its not came on since.

Also the driver info display had faulty pixels a line across the display but now after plugging in the vag com lead all the pixels are working?. Strange.

This is my second superb i had a 1.8T comfort now I have the elegance. Best car I have ever driven in my opinion.

The car has done 81k miles and has service up to 30k. I checked the oil and it has been changed and the filters etc. Also it starts first time so spark plugs must be ok. I am not sure if the car has had its timing belt changed?. It looks a bit worn. I called my local Skoda dealer. Thomson and Potter and they have quoted me £313 supplied and fitted for the cambelt kit I have also asked for waterpump to be done at same time. Is this a reasonable price?.

Another small problem is the rear cigarette tray wont stay closed. It sits open all the time. Is there a catch or something to keep it closed. I had to buy a plastic button cover for the centre console as 1 was missing this cost me £4.83. Not too bad. I think the car needs new front pads and will need 4 new tyres soon.

If anyone can give me advice on the sensors, cambelt, and the abs, traction control light would be much appreciated. There was another fault code something to do with coolent temperature?. Will run the software tomorrow and get full list of codes.

put black velcro or foam on side of cigarette tray, that way will stay closed, and you can still pull it open. Otherwise it is difficult to repair / costly to replace, at least in wood trim on mine. Search for velcro ashtray on the forum

Long beep means dead or dirty parking sensor, try cleaning them first from wax/dirt/etc. If that does not help, you need to replace one by one.

faulty pixels could be due to poor connection, plugging in the vag com lead moves the console slightly and this could make the display to cluster connection better. Either this or some novel way of showing errors by VAG :)

For the rest codes are required, but sounds like the car has problems with wheel sensors and/or geometry (e.g. ESP does like the front wheels to be pointing straight ahead when the steering wheel is straight)

01135 - Interior Monitoring Sensors

36-00 - Open Circuit

My reverse parking sensors arent working either. Also the interior lights in the front dont work. The vanity mirror lights and the map reading lights. I checked the bulbs and they seem fine. Also the glovebox light is not working. I think the ASR and ABS faults might be linked to the steering wheel is not sitting straight when the wheels are straight.

I went to my local skoda dealer for a cambelt kit quote. They have quoted me £412.79 fitted. This includes the cambelt kit with tensioner roller, ribbed v-belt, and water pump. I can get the parts myself from eurocarparts or vwspares and save about £80 on the price they are wanting. The lady said they would do a deal if I were to get all the other faults looked at as well. What are your opinions?. I got the car really cheap so I suppose I was expecting a few things wrong.

Yeah I was going to comment on hoping you got the motor dirt cheap.

First things first. Clear all the codes then go for a drive. Then rescan. Then you'll know what the real faults are.

Steering angle fault would defo throw up the ESP and ABS lights ( I had it when I retro fitted cruise to my 2.8 A4 Quatty and didn't use VCDS properly).

Check the connections on the ABS plug in the engine bay... as it sounds like the whole unit is dead (may be just unplugged ?)

Any signs of accident damage ?

  • Author

Hi no signs of accident damage. I used the vag com with obd II and I reset all the codes and rescanned and this is what came up. Also the reverse sensors.

I will check the ABS connections see if it is connected. I got the motor for £2300. So if I have to spend £500 would still be a cheap car.

The interior is black leather no rips or tears and the engine runs sweet. Gearbox and clutch all sound. The xenons etc work fine and alloys in excellent condition as too is bodywork. Small dent on bonnet but I reckon it will easily come out.

Will also check the ABS sensor for front left it may be loose wiring or covered in dirt. I heard parking sensors aer very expensive so not too fussed about them. Might be electrical not sure though. They usually beep then a long beep.

I already have a coolant temp sensor to replace the old 1. The 1 I got is a green colour with gold. The one thats in looks black and silver.

Looks like you have a goose'd ABS controller then.

BBA-reman do repairs for a decent price,

remanufactured abs controllers pumps and modulators from bba-reman bosch teves lucas and all other types

Steering angle sensor may just need recalibrating or goosed as well.;

VW Passat (3B) Brake Electronics (Bosch 5.7) - Ross-Tech Wiki

The sensor is in the slip ring being the steering wheel. You may want to wipp the wheel off and check all the connections.

I may have a bigger worry now. Went outside to look at the ABS. Fiddled around a bit. When I went to start the car it would not turn over. The car kept turning then eventually burst into life. When it did there was a strong smell of petrol and there was steam/smoke coming from the engine bay?. The first time I started a huge red oil can came up on the display. Checked the oil and its fine. Second time no lights just steam or smoke and souded rough was idling high as well.

When u turn the ignition on it makes a mad burr like noise like pump starting or something but it never used to make burr sound.

Latest update. Think the electrics are playing up. Strange noises. Also battery light was flickering on and off then staying on permanently even though all the remote locking etc was working fine and radio and everything. Here are the latest codes I got.

New ones and some of the old codes have fixed themselves. I reset all the codes and I am going to wait untill tomorrow before i try it. The car turns over straight away now but still idles at 1200rpm and strong smell of petrol. It was raining very heavy here in Scotland today. I had just waxed the car and when i opened the bonnet all the water ran down the back and some landed in the engine bay. DOH! but surely this cannot be the cause?.

The fault for the engine coolant temp sensor can happen when the car is started whilst engine is still warm. Easy enough to replace.

Sorry not to be of more help because from the sounds of it the engine coolant temp sensor probably won't be the cause of your problems .... unless you've noticed it worsens when started warm? Would probably be more like airflow sensor. The engine is able to breathe alright? Hoses and filters all as they should be?

Check this out and give thanks to the original poster if it's of any use to you matey, good luck.

Hi, I have a coolant sensor waitnig to be fitted. I read this could be the cause of it idling high. Also read that if the ABS module is goosed then this can throw up alot of other faults. I am a bit puzzled though how I was driving the car fine then all of a suddon this?.

The car was bought from a garage about 3 days ago. I cannot beleive they sold the car to me like this. It came with 12 months MOT but upon close inspection and diagnostic checks there is NO WAY this thing would pass an MOT unless the garage done the MOT themselves or were very friendly with the MOT station. There is far too many faults on this for it to pass. The back tyres are totally bald on the inside almost half the tyre, the fronts are well worn, The ABS is goosed as is the ASR, There is alot of electrical faults with the car and the car does not start properly or idle properly. Plenty of other things to. I wrote an email to the dealer i bougth the car from and they have told me to send them everything in weriting. So I am going to hopefully drive the car to my SKoda dealer and get them to make a list of every fault and cost for repair/replacements and send it to them. The guy who had the garage was running around in a split new Range Rover Sport so they ahve no shortage of money. Was Thwitans Motors if anyone has heard of them?. They are a part of Arran motors. Down in Preston.

Went out to car this morning and it starts fine. I noticed that there is a small drip coming from underneath the engine. Its water leaking from somewhere it drips once every second roughly.

Still smell of petrol when you start the car. Any ideas or help would be much appreciated.

Sorry to hear you're still having major headaches with this. If you got it from a dealer mind me asking why you don't just return it. Surely they sold with some form of warranty? See if you can retrace where the water is coming from. Front of engine (radiator itself?), rear of engine etc etc. To throw up so many fault is odd. Do you know if the engine bay was steam cleaned before you collected the car?

I've had a B5 Passat with that engine since new (June 2000) and you should not be getting a smell of petrol - have you checked all the air inlet path and around the injectors - whip off the top plastic cover and sniff around. The engine coolant temperature sensor needs replaced - its a pain to get out as access is rather limited! Getting all the interior lights to work would be handy as then at least you might have restored some missing supplies. Obviously you also need to where the water is coming from. Tricky one this as the last thing you want to happen is for the selling dealer to say "stuff it have your money back" - decisions!

I would expect the minor fault - ie the monitoring sensor to be true, mine has had an intermittant one for years!

Left side ABS sensor - this is a heavy engine, have the front wheel bearings been replaced - if not this could be the ABS sensor problem, on the other hand if they have this could also be the ABS sensor problem (damaged not re-fitted correctly).

You do realise that this engine along with others, has a "run on" electric water pump - I think that it runs for 10 minutes after a warm engine stop.

The oil pressure warning was due to the engine not firing quickly enough - so nothing to worry about unless it happens after the engine starts normally.

If you flood these Audi V petrol engines they can be difficult to start if cold when flooded.

  • Author

Hi thanks for the feedback. The water is not leaking anymore it must have been rain water sitting in the car?. Also I think prob the engine had too much petrol in it somehow So was struggling to turn over. Car starts no problem today and have driven it for a bit and no more smell of petrol.

So just seems like alot of electrical gremlins. Going to whip the front left wheel off and take a look at teh ABS sensor it might just be clogged with dirt or not fitted properly. Perhaps once I get the steering wheel aligned these lights will go. I checked all the bushes mounts etc for suspension and engine and tehy are all ok they look like they have been replaced recently as to does teh oil and filters etc and the spark plugs must be ok as it starts no problems and no misfires or juddering.

ust be a short somewhere. I will try disconnect my battery for about 20 mins or so and see if this works. How does the radio code work?. Is it stored in the key?.

Latest update. I took the left front wheel off and the sensor was well dirty. So cleaned it all up and placed it back in. The ABS fault has gone but there is a new one.

01486 - System Function Test Activated

35-00 - -

Also I opened up the battery compartment and removed the battery and you will never guess what I found. About 4-6 inches of water sitting in here right along the whole channel. The 2 drain plugs were totally blocked and clogged with rubbish. Cleaned them out and drained the water. This would explain the steam/smoke coming from engine would have been the water dripping through onto the exhaust.

So most of my faults are gone now. The interior lights at the front are still not working. Will try replacing the bulbs but they look ok. If I change them and they work then all good. On closer inspection of front right looks like might be needing discs and pads. Also track rod end.

Everywhere I look there is work to be done. If I did not love Skoda Superbs so much this car would have been flogged straight away. I got it for £2300 though so even if I have to spend £700 to get it back to the way it should be then £3000 is not bad for an 80k miles 02 plate elegance 2.8 v6 is it not?.

Sounds like the plenum chambers need cleaning and draining. If there was that much water in the channel, check for water ingress. Often leaks through the pollen filter and drowns the convenience module under passenger seat. Search the forum for the topic, it's pretty well documented.

As for cost, it's not a bad price at all man.

Hi, was looking into buying the parts for the car myself. Was looking at vwspares and eurocarparts. Its needing Water pump, cambelt kit,

Skoda recommended i change the ribbed V-belt at the same time is there anything else I should change while this is getting done like thermostat?.

Also I am getting the coolant sensor replaced. Thing is Skoda are wanting £200 for the water pump, cambelt kit and v-belt. £412 fitted

I looked up the 2 sites and I could get all these parts plus the pollen filter, air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, tie rod ends for about £145 all in. Maybe I should call Skoda and see if they will do a deal the woman said they would.

Get them to look at the electrics as well as both vanity mirrors, map lights centre roof light, and all the entry lights under the seat, glovebox, boot and the lights on the bottom of the mirrors are not working. Also the interior monitor and rear parking sensors. The passanger side floor is very wet front and rear.

I would like to get the brakes replaced fornt and rear and 4 new tyres too.

On the subject of replacing the thermostat while the pump and belt are being done, I reckon that you have discovered that the thermostat on the 2.8 V6 is rummered to live BEHIND the cam belt - so replacing it might not be a bad idea as long as you use VAG parts. I might just have missed a trick there - but so far thermostat seems to be okay.

Yup thermostat is behind both belts at the front on Audi V engines.

  • Author

Hi, yeah might get teh thermostat as well. I am well chuffed with myself today. I had a fault with all the interior ligths with the car so I thought I would take a look under teh passanger side of the car. It was well damp. So i dried it out. Then I started to look at teh wiring there is a huge clump of 11 red/black wires in teh passanger side that coem off the main clump and go into the black box of tricks. The holder was blue. I pulled gently and all the wires popped out as it was rusted straight through. The yellow/green wires were also rusted straight through. I clipped them all back and used a metal clip to put them all back together then taped them to death in insulalating tape. Connected the battery up and whoopee all my interior lights work. Will need to try VAG COM again to check the interior monitor sensors. Also my park sensors still not working.

Does anyone know if the park sensors run up into the passanger side of the car into teh control box?. If so what colour are the wires for these might be worth me having a look at this. Well happy I have all interior lights now. Small thing to do without but I am really fussy.

  • Author

Found the wiring to the rear parking sensors its under the right hand panel in the boot. Cant see any faults with this though. Might be something to do with the wiring or worst case scenario its teh sensor itself.

Another question about the wiring. I noticed theat there are 2 lights under the wing mirrors. Can anyone tell me when they are supposed to come on and what wiring controls this in the convenience module below the passanger carpet.

To stop this form happening again I am going to wrap the wiring in compost bags and tape it all closed. I also sealed around the pollen filter and taped up any gaps. So hopefully it wont happen again.

So only 2 problems left. The rear sensors and the lights on the wing mirrors. Will have to check VAG COM see if my interior monitoring sensors are working now as well.

Would be handy to know what colour wire control what.

  • Author

Hi folks. Skoda is looking like its been broken into at the moment. I have the passanger carpet up and all the wiring exposed. I have to say its a pretty rubbish design. The water coming through into the passanger footwell will overtime rust straight through the floor panel.

Anyway I am needing help from someone in the know. I managed to get all my electrics working bar 2 things. Also needing advice about my local Skoda garage.

My mirror adjustment is being funny just wondering if this is normal. When I have the right mirror selected and adjust it this also adjusts the passanger mirror?. When the left is selected it only adjusts the passanger. The fold function works fine as does the heated mirrors.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the electrics?. I cannot seem to find the electrics for the lights under the wing mirrors and its really bugging me. Also my rear parking sensors are playing up. When I engage reverse gear the system just keeps beeping every second or so. BEEP BEEP BEEP and on and on. I checked this with VAG COM and comes up with different results. Sometimes its a short to ground intermittent sometimes there is no signal. 1 of them appears to be fine. Maybe its the wiring or the control module?.

Next up I need advice about my Skoda garage. I use Thomson and Potter. I was in asking for them to give me a quote to supply and fit the following

Cambelt kit

Water Pump

V-Belt

Thermostat

Air Filter

Fuel Filter

Pollen Filter

Spark Plugs

Tie Rod End

They quoted me £203.03 for the water pump, cambelt and v-belt and £412.79 to supply and fit.

They then quoted me £96.28 for the rest of the parts. Not got a quote for fitting yet. All in all though this would be over £500.

Out of interest i checked a website called Trade Parts Specialists and I noticed that these are all VAG parts and come with a 2 year warranty. The prices of the parts are far cheaper. So Skoda must be getting these parts at trade rates or less and flogging them to us for double the price.

For example part 058 133 843 Air filter is £6.90 Skoda are charging £12.29 excluding VAT

part 1H0 819 644 B Pollen Filter is £4.50 SKoda are charging £8.24 excluding VAT

part 1H0 201 511 A Fuel Filter is £5.00 Skoda is charging £9.18 excluding VAT.

So all in all Skoda is charging almost double for every part. They also charge £48 per hour. I think this is a rip off.

Only reason I want them to do it is so i get a Skoda stamp in my book.

Here is a tip for everyone. If you want to reset the service light on your superb simply press and hold the odometer reset button with ignition off. Turn on the ignition and when the service now comes up release the reset button and turn the clock adjust to the right. Hey presto no more service light.

Any help is much appreciated. Will post some pics of the car up soon. If you want to check it out in the meantime check the autoexpress website as they have pictures of it when it was new.

Sounds like nearly everything may be attribituable to the electic getting wet.

On another note, how did you get into the TPS website. Have you registered or something ?

I can't find a way to show a catalogue of prices.
