A mystery engine Felicia 1.3 (1996) - Hot and Slow

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Let me see if I can get this right. The car is the Felicia mentioned above and it has a strange behaviour.

First of all its getting way to hot - the fan starts way to late - no problem i will get a new sensor.

But the car is also lacking speed - it is only possible to drive about 90 km/h. Theres a strange whisteling sound coming from the engine. It has plenty of revs but its just so slooooow.

At first it was worse but now it seems to be a little bit better?!? Or should i say less worse?;)

Any ideas?

Have the valve rocker clearances been adjusted recently? Clutch slipping?

Whistling noise I'm not sure about. Head gasket or coolant leak somewhere maybe? Noisy power steering?

Anewman is right.Have the valves adjusted and from personal experience it's better to be done while engine is warm-not hot nor cold.If the problem persists check whether it happens with hot engine inducting cold air (at night time for example). If so,and in combination with noisy timing chain you may need to have the chain changed. When I changed mine at about 120000 Km, for a reason I still can't understand, it had been expanded more than 1 cm!!!until I had it repaired my feli was only a car for the first 15 minutes every day, until it warmed up.From that point on it became a mule

I'd start with valve clearances, and new plugs and HT leads. Then move on to an oil and filter change and a new air filter (presumes parts not changed in last 6_000 miles or so).

Also, a whistling noise suggests an air leak into the induction system somewhere after the manifold air pressure/flow sensor (can't remember which a Felly uses, but it's 2 different ways to establish actual airflow into the engine). This is probably either a cracked breather hose or a broken inlet manifold to head gasket.

Lykos, all chain drives stretch with use; it's called "wear" and is a fact of life.

If it's getting way too hot under normal driving I'd take the thermosat out and put it in a saucepan and boil it for a few minutes to see if it opens, if not buy a new one, or you could drive it without just to make doubly sure but make sure you change it, don't just leave it without one.
