VRS engine tapping

Featured Replies

Hello all,

After some advice, I have a Octavia VRS MK1 which has developed a horrible sounding tapping noise :thumbdwn: which has given me nightmares and visions of my first ever can the dreaded Fiesta :eek:lol.

I have been advised by a friend that its possible hydraulic lifters issues, he has advised that I will need to replace them.

My first question is how many there are as they are priced £10. each on VWSpares.com.

I understand that there are intake or outlets he advised that I would only need the intake sides is this correct?

He also said that I will have to replace the cam belt and water pump and the cam tensioner chain at the same time?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheer

Jason:D

Mine has the bumper inserts missing at the mo she is having some paint work done to flush them in and the door strip is missing on the passanger door as the wife decided that she was going to borrow the my car and take it to the galleries car park and try and park it in to a wall ,

Just had the wheels painted gloss black  and in the process of getting AP coilovers ordered up.

There are a few going around bristol ive noticed.

Anyone any ideas on how many lifters there are i think it may be 12 but am unsure?

How loud is the tapping? Just a gentle tapping or a really loud, blatently shouldn't do that, sort of tapping? If it's the latter, it could be a result of the oil pick up strainer being blocked up by crud from the engine, preventing the oil from getting sucked up from the sump and pumped around the engine. Fairly common problem and not too difficult to sort once you take the sump off.

It happened to mine once and the tappets started rattling like bar stewards and also brought the oil light on.

back on topic,

I'm wondering what has caused the problem with the lifters, an oil circulation problem perhaps? I vaguely remember something about low oil pressure causing problems, but I could be wrong.

Cam belt should be done every four years or 60k miles so if that is about know it is probably a good idea as then car is going to be coming apart. If ou do a search you will find out about the importance of changing the water pump when you do the cam belt.

niceyellow beat me to it, I type too slowly....

Thanks for the reply mate, will take alook at her tomorrow, i service her every 6-8k and cam belt is done every 15k just to be on the safe side with her being stage 2, ill get her drained and gauze taken off and cleaned.

Cheers

Jason:thumbup:

at the mo mate im in staple hill, movin to cardiff in a week or so lol. iirc it did have black rims but not certain as I was commin off the roundabout and the vRS was bout 3/4 cars back jus gettin on to the roundabout.all I know is there was no black strips on the front n rear bumpers.

cam belt every 15k???? thats a bit pointless int it? take it you do it ur self? well if not you must be rich lol. I changed mine around the 55-56k mark as it was due a service ne way so thought id get it all done in a oner lol.

AP coilovers did not get a good write up from members on here so you may want to consider that before you get them.

If you search threads under AP you will find them.

yea mate, spend a tad more and get weitecs

they are specific to the vRS or get the 1020kg ones for the LCR.

mine are 1000kg ones and they are ace mate

Ref the formatting of the OP, I'm seeing an unusual font, double-spaced, but not caps or unusually large letters.

Ref the OP's query, take it to a proper garage (not a Skoda dealer, a local garage with good mechanics) because there is no need to replace, say, all the inlet tappets if only one or 2 are stuck, and a good garage will be able to sort out which ones need doing.

mmm take it to a place called street wise mate, took mine there and he is great and well priced. clean and tidy. def worth a look lol but be warned to go in to the front diagonally lol

if you go ull see what I mean
