:( Clutching at straws

Featured Replies

Well after 4 days after my remap. my clutch is on its way out :( i guess a standard clutch with 45k's worth of use cant handle 322 ft-lbs of torque...lol

Iv done the whole not botting it below 2k thinkg, and fed the power, but im getting a fair bit of slip in 3rd upwards.

Iv done lots of searches on here and found it most helpful!

I have decided to go down the uprated Sachs clutch route with a new DMF rather than going the SMF route.

After trying to get some prices together, in total im getting close to £1050, which is less than ideal. :(

Prices so far:

Clutch 490 + vat +plus delivery no doubt (seems a good price tho)

DMF came in about 226 + vat from GSF (although im not sure she knew what she was talking about so im not convinced on this)

bearing release valve about 45 quid all in.

Fitting - A local VAG specialist has quoted me 160 +VAT for fitting (thought this was cheap but he is a man of his word)

If anyone could give me any pointers as to where to get a cheaper DMF and the best prices you have found the uprated Sachs clutch i would be most grateful. :)

That price is about right for an uprated clutch. You would save money by fitting a single mass flywheel, but then you have extra noise at idle, and possible gearbox damage at a later date.

Also just cos your getting a bit of clutch slip doesn't mean you'll have to replace the DMF.

i was advised that at 50k, chances are the dmf will be in the same sort of state as the clutch?

you won't need a new DMF unless you have totaly cooked the clutch. Most places will suggest you change it but i am not going to change mine when i do my clutch and im on 90K

I see, well i only noticed it slipping on monday night, just as i was getting to my house, so iv left it alone since then until i get the parts etc......using my mums felicia for now! lol

Once the old clutch is removed, can the DMF be inspected?

Lol my DMF is ****ed but my clutch plate is fine no slip (yet).

what are the signs of the DMF being damaged / needing to be replaced?

After a few days of my revo map my car was back at the workshop having a Sachs clutch fitted, DMF was not replaced though and has been faultless given it gets ragged now and then!

what are the signs of the DMF being damaged / needing to be replaced?

going "grrrr-wibble-grrrr-wibble-grrr-wibble" after a long drive and leaving it to idle.

 is that the technical description? ha ha

to tell if your DMF is servicable ,there is a kit available that checks the condition of the springs etc , and this is the only way of knowing that the DMF will either fail within the next user service interval ( checks the radial loading ), though its very expensive , this is the kit used to check your DMF if you return it to the manufacturer as " faulty from new " which due to modern manufacturing methods , it wont be ( ~ I worked 3 years on clutch warranty for a large UK manufacture )

unless you can get your DMF checked for free ( and a good clutch fitting center should have this kit ) , probably just easier to purchase new one for confidence ~ and new bolts !

Think il just get it done for peace of mind.

I had a tuning box for 2 days and it made my clutch slip - now i've got a Sachs performance clutch and a Special Jabbasport SMF!

I like the SMF chatter!

you won't need a new DMF unless you have totaly cooked the clutch. Most places will suggest you change it but i am not going to change mine when i do my clutch and im on 90K

Likewise, I had my Sachs Organic clutch fitted around 86/87,000 miles post remap and kept the OEM DMF and got JBS to check the condition of my DMF all was fine, now upto 123k still with the OEM DMF and running fine. I think the tip is, once the clutch starts to slip be very gentle until you have your new clutch in and bedded in.

hmmmm, might have to try keeping it then and see how it goes......whats the deal if the DMF fooks up? dont want to have to fork out for another uprated clutch should a problem occur.

so basically, the true cost of a remap is more like £2k...

Yep. Hence why I removed mine. Can't say I miss it either. Just means you have to try harder :D

Amended for clarity.

Plenty of people have remapped cars and not had to replace the clutch. But most of them were the original owners and had good condition clutches to start with.

Most of the issues I've noticed people complaining about have been on lower mileage older cars where the new owner (possibly the 3rd or 4th owner) has had a remap on a clutch that's been hammered doing short trips around town. There's no practical way of telling the condition of a clutch on a 6 year old car, but there are plenty of folks buying early vRSs and getting them remapped. And low mileage cars must be better, mustn't they?

The guys with 90,000 miles on their remaps are all doing biggish mileages on motorways where the clutch is only lightly used.

Got majorly peed about by a sponsor company on here, who then sent the wrong parts! not impressed! but hey life goes on.....

After many problems with trying to get hold of an uprated clutch, its now back to life!!!! woooohooo

Is the uprated clutch normally heavier....

Oh and it wasnt awesome, they were good

Edited by B6MFD

Is the uprated clutch normally heavier....

yes , because the cover plate spring pressure is greater to stop the slippage
