Rad fans not spinning, and using a large amount of coolant.

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone

Ok I had to put some water in the car about 2k ago (mounth or so) as it was low, now after driving round in the hot weather I again have the coolant light on.

I have done the normal tests of putting the aircon on and seeing if the twin fans spin at half speed..... I get nothing at all, both fans don't move.

I checked all the fuses ontop of the engine and in the cabin, but i can't see any that need changing. I am about to take it someware but thought I would ask here first.

Thanks

Phil

There's a fan thermoswitch somewhere (near the radiator, I guess) which can go AFAIK...

There is a fan switch in the bottom corner of the radiator on the passenger side. This also where all the plugs are for the fan loom.

would i need to replace that then? is there anyway of finding out if it is defo that?

Yes. If the thermo-switch fails, the fans don't run!

ok kool i will get a new one, thanks for the help everyone.

You any good with a multimeter? Before you buy one pop the plug off and use the multimeter to work out which wire is live and which wire goes to the fans and the use a bit of wire to by-pass it to see if the fans are working o.k first.

took the car to skoda in northampton near where i work. They looked over it said it was using coolant because the water pump was leaking..... as for the fans not coming on he said this was due to the aircon not having any gas and that was why when i turn the Air con on no fans spin. He tested the gas and it was indeed empty.

So they advised a new waterpump, cambelt, 90K service and aircon regas and leak check.....£400 all in.

What does everyone think?

Not a bad price if that's a full cambelt kit, rather than just the rubber belt.

yea thats the full kit

That's a good price for that!

Mine is using water slowly and I thought....poo, turns out, the expansion tank is leaking round the middle seal, so got to get a new one off Skoda?

Both my fans wont turn on :( Had the aircon regassed the other week. It was half full, now full but still no joy. Need to check that fan switch.

does any one know the part number for this fan switch? Also cost for a new one from the dealers?

Cheers

yea thats the full kit

I think that there are a few proper VAG indies down your way - maybe even UNIT18 - their work and prices would be better than Skoda for the engine work, then get a mobile A/C specialist to check out the A/C.
