Octavia 1.9 PD Classic

Featured Replies

Thinking about changing my Fabia vRS and going for something a bit more roomy.

Have seen a 58 plate Octavia 1.9pd Classic.

A couple of questions please?

Does it come with any sort of trip computer?

Can it be retro fitted with cruise control?

What sort of MPG is achievable ie whats the best figures you have had out of this engine?

Thanks for your help !

With the 1.9 in my 06 Elegance I average low 50's mpg with mixed town and A roads with the occasional foray onto the motorway. Driven gently on the motorway at 70 should give 60mpg, the worst I have ever got over a full tank is 48mpg - all short trips in the depths of winter

The Classic is pretty basic spec and I don't think it has a computer

The 1.9 PD will be a hell of a lot slower than a VRS though... A remap may go part way towards sorting this though - Revo do a 145 bhp remap which I'm considering :)...

I'd recommend looking for the Elegance trim in the Octavia - very good spec for usually not a lot extra buying second hand. Cruise control can be retrofitted and having bought my first car with cruise control a month and a bit ago I don't think I'll ever buy a car without it again.

I'm using a 105 Octy Elegance at the moment, as a courtesy. Goodness me, it's like it doesn't have a turbo at all! Granted I'd just stepped out of a TFSi vRS and had a hybrid Fabia before that, but still....

With a remap it might be quite reasonable. But I'd personally look at the PD140 diesel to start off with.

I wish mine would get anywhere near this, best i've ever managed is 450miles to a tank!

And thats with quite a run, maybe its the 225/40/R18's that are killing it off whilst driving around the city.

Only use to manage 360miles around town before the turbo went pop!

Classic trim will be very basic compared to the VRS, you don't even get a folding key.

I'm getting around the 500 mile mark mostly short taxi runs, are you brimming the tank??

Change your oil every 10K regardless and that should save your turbo

Don't go from a fabia Vrs to a octy classic. If you're after the economy of the 1.9 at least get an elegance.

or an Ambiente, there's some nasty bits on the Elegance that cost a fortune when they break, if you are planning on keeping the car for a good while.

Yes i am filling it to the brim, i live in a area with a few ups and downs though.

The turbo let go at 125k after 7k on fresh oil, but the previous 117k it was on variable service. Clocking somewhere in the region of 18k every 3 months .

Its much better than the 190miles to a tank, i was achieving from the Coupe Turbo though hahaha.

Thanks to all

Looks like it will have to be an Elegance then...

Trying to get a good deal on a new one as can't seem to find a decent low mileage example which is much less than a new one!

I've heard rumours that Skoda are likely to be offering VAT free across the Octavia range from July onwards.

Can anyone "in the know" confirm this ???

If so, I'll wait....

I was considering an Elegance as my first Skoda, I'd be interested to know what the nasty bits are that you refer to. Thanks

Only things to go wrong with the Elegance over the Ambiente are the arm rest (can an arm rest go wrong? :) ) dual zone climate, auto dipping mirror, auto wipers, parking sensors, nicer alloys, leather stearing wheel and gear stick knob / gaitor, headlight washers and cruise control. None of which are particularly trouble prone items and certainly have never caused me any hassles in 3.5 years of Octy 2 ownership.

In my opinion, Elegances are a great, comfort oriented spec, with nothing particularly worrying to go wrong and are a great value second hand proposition.

as wega3k says really, my main concern is the climate, looks expensive to fix

My Elegance is 3yrs old and the only Elegance bit that has gone wrong is the chrome peeling off the handbrake button - replaced under warranty. Or is the chrome handbrake button standard on the whole range?

Mate had an Elegance for 4yrs and 100,000 miles with no problems (except deep regret for getting Ivory trim!!!) - that is why I got one (with black trim!).

No doubt about it - the Elegance is a great balance between cost and trim level - there are loads about (especially 1.9Tdi) so shop around for a good un!
