Is £180 a fair price to HeliCoil the sump in order to repair the sump plug area and refill my 1.8T vrs with fully synthetic oil?

Also how much oil is required to fill from empty? I think I'm been charged for 9L but I have a feeling he's charged me for filling it when checking the leak and again for fixing it. Surely he could have simply drained the new oil and added that back in afterwards?

How much is a new sump, it maybe cheaper than trying to fix the current one. The sump holds about 5l of oil.

I think the sump capacity is about 4.5litres of oil, plus a bit extra to fill the filter, etc (well thats the case for my TDi). Dunno about a price for the helicoil. Did you cause the damage, or did a dealer/garage do it? If the latter then I would expect the garage to cover the costs.

Hi Sneeks,

Might be worth enquiring about the cost of replacing the sump if that is what you're being quoted. I recently had the displeasure of cracking the sump on my Fabia vRS and to replace the sump, guard and oil cost £250 all in. I know yours is an Octy but surely the cost wouldn't be wildly different. If theres only £50 or so in it I'd get a new one fitted. Hope this helps, all the best.

Clarkey.

The leak has developed naturally and I was warned before he checked it that the threads around the plug were most likely to blame. In order to check this he had to drain the oil from the car. Sure enough the threads were to blame and as he was unable to fix it at that time he did a temporary repair job and refilled the oil. The car was back today to get fully repaired and I was surprised to learn I was charged for 9L of oil as it's not the cheapest of stuff from what I can gather.

I've no idea how much jobs like this usually cost though so perhaps the price is fair?

Clarkey, thanks for the comments. I was quoted £300 for the sump alone originally but I've just phoned another dealer and they have quoted £257.60 fully fitted. I wish I'd chose that option now.

I tend to agree, shame really as it's a mechanic I've used for years and he's normally very well priced.

Hi,

A couple of years ago i was driving around a sunny scottish loch, it was a lovely day........................... enough it was damp and cold and for the whole two weeks it was the same............ sorry i digress whilst driving around this loch I managed to hit a strategically placed rock which took out my sump, i was peeved having said car serviced only a week before by Adamsons garage in Deal Kent( where I live not go for servicing) anyway a friendly local mechanic changed my sump and replaced the long life oil for £160 which i thought was great, but he did point out a strange fact!!! Apparently adamsons had managed to fuc.....err break my sump plug and then used a helicoil to replace it, wonderful, however they hadn't informed me, but this wasn't a problem really, cos it just happened that swarf from the helicoil was blocking most of my pick up pipe, so a rock by a loch may save your engine!! this probably isn't a helpful post but.........................oh well

New sump is about £150 at a local indy, so I'm affraid I'd go with the taking the p*ss option.

I had the classic stripped thread on my sump plug (90bhp TDi), when I went into the dealers to inquire about the price of the sump they asked what the problem was. After I told them they said they could helicoil it for £26, I had an oil change service at the same time so the total cost ended up at approx £120.

That was 50k miles and several oil changes ago, and all is still well.
