How many miles can you do after Maxidot says range left is zero?

Featured Replies

I knew I was low on fuel, but the dash indicated a had a range of 30 miles left for a round trip of 20 - no problem I thought and off I set. Got there and was told I had another 20 miles left, did the job and started the return journey with 10m to go and a reported range of 20m. No problem as for the first three quarters of the tank I'd been towing, so the mph had been reduced, but now being solo I guessed the computer was a little out. Then five miles later the range left had dropped to zero. So after another 3½m I decided I better fill up.

Just wonder how much further I could have gone...

In answer to your question, i am not sure.

But.. How much fuel did you put in to fill it up, that should give you a rough idea how much juice you had left? 55L capacity tank i think?

I've done 15 miles with it on zero, on the motorway on a raining sunday night with 2 kids asleep in the back and a wife giving me grief for not filling up before we set off - man was i glad when we got to the services!!!!

I've refueled a mile or two after the range showed 0 and actually managed to get 55L in, so I guess I was running on fumes!

With that in mind I would guess it's pretty accurate and certainly won't push it in future.

Get yourself a fuel can, then brim the car 55 plus whatever the filler takes?? and set the trip to ziro then drive until empty then compare what max says to the trip

Not a lot as the filling station was charging way over what I normally pay.

Eeeek, I wouldn't advise that, when the engine conks out, and last wifs of unburnt fuel could damage your catalytic converter

Folk run out of fuel all the time and no damage is done, no fuel left no damage

Pretty sure the trip computer works out how many miles you have left at the last calculation of your current driving style. So whn you were towing it would work it out how far left you could go, say you then unhitched whatever was on the back, then started your journey, the trip would initially calculate what you could have done at the previous calcualtion which would have been with the trailer. After a bit it would recalculate and give you a new value hence your range to empty went up. I've done about 5 miles when the trip said 0 miles to empty. Not something i'd recomend but the bloody fuel station i was driving to had ran out of derv. :(

I've done 22 miles after mine said "0 miles" - not maxidot but the same principle; and most of those were driving around Bristol trying to find a bl**dy petrol station!!

No it went down! Range started at 20 miles, then after travelling 5 miles, it read Zero!

Managed to get a terryfying 35 miles on the motorway on 0 before finding the services. Never been happier to see a shell station!

What made it worse is that I'm running a Diesel and I've heard lots of warnings about not letting them run out of fuel. Never gonna let it go that low again.

Yes, I'm sure it is based on driving style too - my miles left to need to fill up has gone up a few times depending what I'm doing - speed, motorway etc.

I also suspect that it will be calibrated to be on the definate 'safe side' just to cover themselves in case you ran out when it was showing a mile left or something...

My last two fillups were quite hairy. Have the EMFA which indicates how much fuel is left in the tank. According to the EMFA there are still 3 litres left when the range indicates zero.

So the first fillup I drove until the EMFA indicated 0 litres and I filled up 56,71 litres, one week later (last thursday) I drove untill it indicated 1 litre and filled up 56,12 litres.

3 litres can give you up to around 60km. (driving a diesel ;))

I managed almost 40 on a Fabia TDi a few years back and it didn't run out but it was almost empty for sure.

I've done around 40 miles in my TDi Bora and 20 in the petrol vRS. Actually did run out in the Bora, twice.

:D Didnt dare to do this in the last 109.000km. But getting more confident I thought I should give it a try. (always carry a 20 litre can with spare VPDiesel with me ;) )
When it shows 20 miles & you're feeling comfortable knowing that you'll definitely get to civilisation (& a petrol station) in that time, it suddenly drops to 7 miles in a blink - mine did! ... then the sweat starts & it goes to 3 miles... then I found a filling station! That wasn't a pleasant ½ hour for me!

That's impressive, as it only ever displays increments of 5!!

Yes, but Simbo's is special ;)

Not maxidot but the standard computer on an '08 vrs pd......

Thought I'd fill up at the Sainsburtys in Cannock on my way through, only to find it closed at that time of night on a Sunday. So some frantic but gentle driving around with the range saying zero looking for a petrol station in a town I don't know. Asked a taxi driver and the bloke said follow me. So I did, to the nearest place still open. What a gent!

Put in 56 litres to the first click.

Funny thing was, the range said 25 miles 5 miles previous on the M54. So I just don't let it get that low now.

SWMBO was not happy. But not as unhappy as when we got 48 litres into a 45 litre hire car fuel tank on our honeymoon in Iceland after kangarooing the last 5km into a very remote town. Sorry, hamlet. Wasn't helped by getting a puncture 25kms previouslt as well.

They don't do AA or RAC in Iceland. And there aren't many other cars to thumb a lift. But we are still married!
