High water temp

Featured Replies

Peeps, done some towing on Friday (12mls, nice sunny day).

Towed to same load several time before, but this time the temp gauge rose to 3/4.

I was home by this time so turned the engine off. I was alarmed to not here the fans running.

Water bottle is at correct level, what's going on?

No I have not checked the fuses as the hand-book does not specify which fuse does the fan(s).

There could be many things that cause this to happen, but what was you towing, and were you on a motorway and at what speed?

It could be the thermostat stuck closed,

R2: Towing a raceboat, no more than 650kg. 50 mph, urban motorway.

Ran car again today (not towing) warmed up as usual and remained at normal.

I don't think I have a stat problem.

this is what mine was like and it turned out to be the water pump impeller braking up:eek:

Could be relay problems or fuse problems, dunno where any of them are located!

Can anybody tell me where the relays are.

I know most of the fuses are on the end of the dash, but which one does the fan(s)?

I cannot find any info on fuses or relays for the fans but if you have the Haynes manual, section 3.5 has a good guide about testing the motor, motor switches and wiring.

Took it to Motoline Skoda today for a service & a butchers at the cooling problem.

Service done, OK. Cooling problem not sorted, they checked the fuse(s) & relay(s), all were correct, diagnostic did not disclose a problem with cooling ,,,,, then they ran out of time !!!!!

Removed car from Motoline, deposited with Saunders Abbot who will now check the cooling control module which is located below the battery.

I'm thinking, this sounds "ker-ching", lodsa dough.

Watch this space. :(

Transpires the cooling control modual is creamed. New one now installed.

Also it was discovered that the fuse box (on the top of the battery) was a fire hazard , it's being replaced!

Motoline Dartford (remember, they checked the fuses & relays ,,,,,, ) :thumbdwn:

Prices to follow peeps.

The 3 fuses to the left of the terminal block had melted (common fault Skoda says).

The terminal which connects to the alternator was burnt (should replace cable as it's got hot Skoda says) replacement costs 30 squids!

All the above could have caused the radiator fan control unit to fail.

Total bill of repair ,,,,,,, £364.50.

This includes Air Conditioning Service (£40.00) & 1 gram Air Con Gas @ £25.00 !!!!!

1 gram Air Con Gas @ £25.00 !!!!!

Had the air con serviced on my Octy and they added over 500 grammes of gas. Total price £44!

The cooling fan will only be required when there is little or no airflow through the radiator. Theoretically all the time the car is moving excess heat should be dissipated into the air from the radiator. The question therefore you must ask is whether or not the radiator is actually hot. If it isn't, or if the bottom of the radiator is noticeably hotter than the top then cooling fan or no cooling fan your engine will overheat. Possible causes here would be a faulty thermostat or a restricted radiator.....
