vRS cam belt

Featured Replies

I have read a few threads regarding the timing of cam belt changes on the Vrs and I'm still confused.

I have a 56 plate Vrs that is coming up for 60K miles, my question is what engine is it (ASZ or BLT) and what mileage does the belt need doing. My dealer says 60K but reading on here it seems this depends on what engine variant it is.

Any help / advice is greatly appreciated.

4 years or 60k. Whichever comes first

4 years or 60k. Whichever comes first

as above and i thought that it was regardless of which engine code

4 years or 60k

The engine code is recorded on the vehicle data sticker. One should be stuck to the inside front cover of your car's Service Schedule and the other to the boot floor under the carpet.

Well, I hate to be a dissenting voice, but my BLT engine is 80K or 4 years. I am looking at a letter from my dealer stating this.

Why do people keep saying its 60K ? This may have been true for the ASZ.

Im shocked that people state with such certainty its 60K.

*edited* please see this post http://briskoda.net/fabia-i/vrs-cambelt/141946/ for a longer thread with a definitive description.

Just change at 60k or 4 years and sleep easy o.k?

But Matt, if it's a BLT engine, why change it early ? I agree if its 4 years (but as the OP has a 56 plate car it isnt 4 years old is it ?).

As its a 56 plate I assume it will be a BLT engine, and personally I have an 06 vrs on 55K and will change the belt at 4 years as I will be on about 70K at that point.

The OP question was 'what mileage does my belt need doing' and the factual answer for that is different from an opinion. OK if its ASZ then I assume (I don't know) that it is 60K or 4 years whichever is first. However I do know that for my BLT engine its 80K or 4 years.

Fabia VRS has a ASZ coded engine.

Personally gonna do my 2005 Fabia VRS at 5 years old, considering only done 40,000 miles at 4 years old, and now I only cover some 5,000 miles a year, since retiring.

Shall change water-pump,auxilliary belt and cambelt at the same time.

I would have said 60-70,000 miles would warrant a change, (above) since you are doing some fairly high mileage.

Pricey job at a garage, but that does carry a sort of a failure warranty??

Good-luck. Ian. :rofl::thumbup:

1) Vrs has ASZ and BLT engine codes depending on year

2) If yours is ASZ it should be done at 4 years (e.g. now), do you really fancy a repair bill if it fails ?

3) Its a combination of mileage AND age, whichever is reached sooner. So for the ASZ I assume yours will need doing in 2009, not at 5 years.

There is a difference between what the specifications are, and what people are saying here. Its OK to change them at a different period/mileage to the specification as long as you understand that is the case but there is a potential for mis-information in this thread. Especially as people are using colours, bold and large fonts to state things that arent correct.

*edited* Do the cambelt intervals deserve a sticky ?

Thanks for the info RBW, I'll check which one mine is then get in contact with the dealer.

My dealer told me its 80k/4 years for the BLT engine which mine is but I'll be getting it done before then as personally I think its too long !

I hear you Rainbow but I would change at the intervals stated earlier even if I had the later motor. For the sake of a few hundred quid I personally would get it done. I don't know how different the later engine is though. All v confusing as OP states!

Hello rainbow-walker,

Many thanks for your appreciated advice and have inwardly digested.

However even Skoda are not clear cut as two seperate dealerships don't agree ?? .

One quoted as you did, the other quoted the mileage as late as 60,000 miles??

If they can't agree, what is the message here, if in doubt do something about it.!!!

Thanks Ian. 24/07/2009 :rofl::thumbup:

Hi Ian

I have a 55 plate that has currently done 38k, and I'm thinking the same as you... think i'm going to have it replaced at 5yrs which will be getting close to 50k. My dad changed his at 6yrs/50k on his 130 Octavia and the belt was fine.

Not to throw fuel on the fire or anything... but rubber/plastic does age regardless off wear, and also, the springs in the tensioners may have a set life span as these are always working at full tension, aren't they?

The logic in my brain tells me that you can have a perfect belt but if the tension goes it's just as prone to a mis hap?
