little bit of driving pleasure!!!

Featured Replies

I know people are always so down with driving in modern Britain. can understand why! but thought i would start an upbeat thread about good driving expiriences:cool:

i was lucky enough to have use of an m3 afew days back. the sun was setting, the radio was off. the 3.2 rasp of that engine makes me go all fuzzy inside haha. was driving from huddersfield to wakefield. it took mee over an hour to get back, lets just say i took the long way home!

very little traffic and all that power. just total perfection. no bumpy roads, no police cars, no chavs trying to race me. just open road.

genuinely never felt so at one with driving before.

Having lived round there for the best part of 23 years, I can appreciate what you're saying. If you know where to go the roads can be amazing and the feeling of being at one with your machine is quite achievable.

Now I live on the east coast, the moors roads around Whitby are my stomping ground and I too can attain car nirvana on a regular basis. All I have to do is get up before the numpty tourists crawl out of their caravans and B&Bs and decide to tavel at 38mph absolutely everywhere - even 30mph zones.

I feel for people who live in suburbia and rarely get a chance to enjoy their cars due to speed cameras and other restictions.

Good on yer for having a nice time Mr Clayton.

it was one thing i liked the most when i use to drive around all of the country was finding these quiet roads. The first tomtom i had was excellent for scenic routes and some great roads around norfolk, dorset, oxfordshire and up peak district way. As more and more people discover them the enjoyment goes, but get a quiet day and its just that, bliss....

I went on holiday with my family in april. Rented a kinda castle type place, was looking forward to it, but wasnt expecting there to me much to do. Turns out was jus round the corner from "the cat and fiddle" and some of the most amazing roads i`v even seen. amazing

Being near to the Lakes means I can choose from some great roads, and to have one to yourself on a clear day is just the best thing in the world! :D

However, I've just been on my first trackday, and being able to drive something exotic was unforgettable! If I had the space to keep it, I'd now be looking for a cheap car to make into a trackday toy  It was awesome! :D:D

i suppose fuel has something to do with people not driving for pleasure. the M3 isnt the most eco car out there (put 60 quid in the tank and got about 180 miles out of it) but it was worth it.

ive been inspired to plan a road trip. looking at some countries. fancy going to australia and blasting from one side to the other

Do it - me and the missus have done some pretty long road trips around the US and parts of Australia and it's the most amazing experience. You meet some ace people, have some brilliant experiences that you'd never have if you just fly over the top, and there are so few people that you get some ace driving moments too!

Ahhhh, coast to coast road trip in the states and oz, 2 of my dreams :)

I often drive purely for pleasure, and my beloved Yorkshire Dales are quite conveniently just 20 minutes away. If I 'get lost' and end up in the Lake District, North Yorks Moors, Derbyshire Peaks or wherever, so what :D From Huddersfield, I'd have 'got lost' and headed south through Penistone to Midhopestones, and then the 12 miles of Hell that is Strines Moor. A quick pint at the Ladybower and and then do Snake Pass to Glossop, returning on the Woodhead Pass, turning off for Holmfirth on the A6024 Holme Moss road just to make a day of it :D

Cat'n'Fiddle is/was a great road, now spoilt by the 50mph limit and rigid enforcement (plane, helicopter and remote monitoring via embedded induction loops and ANPR). Miles of nothing, so lots of danger eh ?

After your track experience in the exotica, get yourself along to a 'proper' track. Elvington's OK, but you need to experience Cadwell, Donnington, Oulton etc. The proper circuits are massively better experiences, whether you're in a supercar or just a humble hatchback. I've done Elvington in my mates Atom, and another mates 360 CS, and both runs although impressive were overshadowed by the beauty of Cadwell which is probably the finest 'drivers circuit' in the country. Airfields are always flat, and having no crests and dips robs the driver of so much potential for excitement IMHO.

I went to Whitby last week, and still love that road over the moors from York. I quite enjoyed all the numpty tourists with their caravans and ming-mong-mobiles, they presented some excellent overtake opportunities. the line of sight on some stretches of that road last for miles!:D

And the Plod with their LT2020's love being able to see for miles too ;)
