Trying to point out how stupid these acronyms are as a meaningful way of deciding on a car.

Gotcha :P

I bought my GPS two years ago and have done 79k with no real issues (certainly much less problems than my vRS) nothing wrong with my clutch and its been driven by learners for 79k, and has been running 314lbs/ft of torque since 4k when it was mapped....

You let learner drivers out in a remapped car? How do you get insurance for that??

quite easily, its only group 6 and my insurance company has it listed as 173 bhp (even though its only 158) costs £360 fully comp.... remember they are not really insuring the learners, I'm sitting next to them with dual controls and will interfere if things go wrong, if you wanted to drive my car without me sitting there you'd have to be 25+ years... and the insurance companies aren't daft.... every learner has to have a £250 excess, and what are the only accidents happen on driving lessons? kerbed, new wheel and tyre £250, insurance company wont have to pay, lost wing mirror £150, insurance company wont have to pay, someone hits the back of us, other person pays.... quite a low risk really.... anyone over 25 has no excess....

i've had a few doblo's and a ducato all with the 1.9 JTD engine, and no complaints. they seem decent enough.

There's alot of cars that use this engine, JTD engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Seems very well established like our beloved 1.9TDI

thats a bigger list than I thought... I'd forgotten about the suzuki swift using it too.....

neither did i, could have a rather nice sleeper type of car in the swift, presuming its remappable like the punto

i had a rover ron box on my saab which is the same engine , made a noticeable difference , still have it somewhere.

I totally agree with Dr Z here, around the bilnkered comments about Fiats, specially coming from a brand that had a similar reputation 10 years ago ( 1st Octy destroyed that old rep), I would bet that anyone who owns any Skoda will defend the brand ?

Times change, VW's are not currently the bullet proof build & quality they once were. & Skoda are starting to be seen ad excellent value for money & VW now overpriced.

If youre looking at comparing the Fiat TD & VW TD, look around to see who uses these engines and see what reliability issues are around. ( be aware that the VW CR engine is still new to the market & some will have niggles ).

With ref to dealers, regardless of which brand you buy, you will get good / bad / indifferent ones.

My local Fiat dealer has been brilliant, but then so was the Skoda dealer i bought my 3 previous cars from., Fiat UK customer service - Well thats another story, then again search the site & you will find that people have had problems with Skoda UK customer service.

I depends on the car & dealer you get whether you het good / bad / indifferent.
