Petrol instead of Diesel

Featured Replies

Hi,

Like an idiot, I put £5 of petrol in my 1.9D Felicia. If I put in enough diesel, will I be able to dilute the petrol down enough to prevent any damage or do I need to remove all the petrol. Any help will be very appreciated.

Many thanks

Ian

No , just brim it with diesel and drive it.

When you've used a fivers worth of fuel , top it up again and repeat a few times.

It should be ok.

Busses and trucks use to add petrol to the diesel (about 5%) to prevent freezing

Wont hurt it, even my fabia ha srun with a bit of petrol in it after picking up the wrong pump

I put around a gallon of petrol in my Fabia vrs last year. I filled up tank with diesel and added double dose of Millers sport for lubrication. Every time I used 1/4 tank I topped up with diesel and normal dose of Millers, did this four times and all was fine.

It was a bit harder to start before the first 1/4 tank fill up but soon after it was back to normal. Also keep revs down, just steady driving is advisable while doing this as petrol strips lubrication, hence the millers.

It worried the hell out of me at the time but all should be ok.

Thank you all of you for your replies. I have also been advised by someone else to keep the fuel cap of which may allow a small bit of the petrol to evaporate off. Don't know if this will work, but i guess it is worth a try.

I'm going to guess that the @$$hole who told you to leave the fuel cap off has never skidded their car on spilt diesel!  Also, since an effectively sealed fuel system is a requirement of the MoT MOT UK car and vehicle MOT information equipment car servicing parts and spares - exhaust emissions I suspect that it's illegal, and may leave you uninsured.

If it's done while it's parked on the drive and not being driven I don't see that it's a problem

I would never drive with the fuel cap off. It will only be taken off whilst parked up and secure. Sorry I didn't make that part clear lol.

In my mothers previous car, and old Citroen AX diesel, it stated in the manual that you can add up to 1 gallon of petrol to a full tank of fuel to prevent waxing. However modern winter diesel has additives to prevent this and I would not want to try it with modern engines with high pressure fuel pumps. I think £5 of petrol may be OK but it may give a little more smoke when running. I agree with others keep diluting it with fresh diesel and a dose of Millers

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the replies. I have been running it for a few days now without too much of a problem. The only real thing I had was that it was a little hard to start at first (guessing there was too much of a concentration of petrol). But now she starts without any problems. I will top her up a few times with diesel and then take it from there. But once again, thank you all.

Ian
