picked up the octy on wednesday and the remote locking doesn't work.i've had the electircal cleaner out for the contacts and replaced tyhe battery and nothing has solved it yet.

is there a way of reprogramming the remote myself or woult it be a main steelers job?

nithing unlocks with the rewmote, the garage said it worked when they got the car in but it has packed up since.

It may just need recoding or the Central Convienience unit may be having issues. Does the system make any noises? IE do the doors lock then unlock or is there just nothing? Does the central locking work if you use the key in the door or the boot? You need to find someone with VAGCOM that can pull the codes to help you diagnose where the problem lies

It's of some debate but the ebay ones are fine for code reading. I'd get on of the usb ones you can use with the shareware version of vag com if you have a laptop if not you'll have to go for one of the full readers and just google for the codes it returns.
