Occy chip performance boost?

Featured Replies

I am thinking of having my Occy VRS chipped (which is best? Jabba? )

And have seen figures of 230bhp quoted, has anyone done any timed tests on the differance? Are these mod's reliable as i don't want to blow anything just yet ;)

Also how is fuel consumption affected?

Thanks

Depends on your requirements. Location, budget etc all come into it. "Best" is subjective, but you'll almost certainly be happy with any of the major tuners.

Even with my dubious driving & self-timing i can hit 7 seconds to 60, could probably do better with practice. It's the mid-range that's most impressive, overtaking is a hoot :D

My RS went to Jabba on 5000 miles, it's now on 20000 and has been utterly reliable. I think you'll find that experience repeated on cars with a LOT more miles on them.

Also how is fuel consumption affected?

Boot it, and obviously it will drink fuel. Drive sensibly, and most of us have found fuel mileage actually improves ;)

It's worth considering the boost controller too, so you can adjust to suit when full power isn't needed :)

Yeah a boost controller sounds a good bet, i didn't know they were available, how much extra are they? Looks like i know what i am getting for Xmas now :)

Have to agree with Geoff that ALL the tuning options on offer will give you the same net end result - the car is transformed but it depends on budget, preferences, recommendations etc etc....

Re: the boost controller I'm not too sure I see the point tbh but the option is there should you wish to go down that route.

Last group buy price for re-map + boost contoller was

Getting the car chipped is a must. A few days ago, I had the timed Revo demo (which is restricted to about 200 bhp) applied to my car by JBS Auto Designs, and certainly noticed the difference.

Now the demo has expired and the car is back to normal, it feels like it is now lacking. :thumbdwn:

So I''m off back to JBS next weekend to have the full program applied, as well as the DV and TIP changed. Looking forward to about 220bhp. :D

There is a full explanation of the benefits of the variable boost controller on Jabbasports site here. Go to Products then Boost Controller. The controller has all the benefits of 'switchable' programmes and more - as Geoff can confirm.

For "normal" use, i.e. running around town / to & from work etc, i run mine with the boost controller turned right down.

For playing (and ONLY when using optimax) i turn it up to max. I was advised when at Jabba to turn it down to about 3/4 if i need to use SUL/Ultimate.

IIRC, fitting the boost controller allows Jabba a bit more room to play with the map, this has resulted in a slightly reduced "headline" BHP figure on mine, but with a vastly improved mid-range. The car feels a lot quicker under acceleration, and even more driveable than before.

Me is happy :D

I am signed up for a current group buy to get mine done for much the same reasons as Geoff - but am waiting for Jabba's 4WD RR to be up and running again following their move...

Geoff...is the boost controller easily removed for service time etc? Also, as you had it fitted after your map, was the tweaking of the map in with the price of the controller or extra?

Edited to say:Sorry, have just read Jabbas site and see it can be removed :)

Cheers

I see on Jabbas site that the map will take the car to between 218bhp and 230bhp. When it comes to insurances, do you have to quote the top or bottom figure?

Thanks for the info, very interested in having this done, will leave it a couple of months before i get it done so i get another boost in performance once i have got used to this :)

It's very easily removed. A simple Jack plug connection to insert / remove if you need to put the car in for service.

I'd advise setting it to minimum, then removing the adjuster so the techies at the dealers can't benifit from the extra power when they do the chip shop run ;)

I had my original remap done almost exactly a year before having the boost controller done.

When i went back, i had the map "tweaked" to take advantage of the controller at a total cost of

Ventmore,

With my insurance (DL) it was the % increase in power that mattered - not the top line figure. 218 is 21% , 230 is 28%. I would quote the higher figure if I was you.

Wise words from Jane, even if she doesn't like my sig pic.... :peepwall:

Always give them the full story, then it can't come back to haunt you later.

Or switch to LV, who don't care :)

How much does it hike the insurance?

Mine is suprisingly cheap compared to my RS2000 4x4 which isn't a patch performance wise.

How long is a piece of string ? ;)

Jane & Geoff.

Cheers for the advice. I'm thinking of having a remap at the beginning of next year, so may also consider the boost controller. Depends on money, as I was also going to get an uprated DV, though not sure if this is really neccessary. I had a feeling it would be the top figure. I do like to keep things straight with the insurance companies, as they'll use absolutely any reason to get out of a claim.

Hmmm well i better check it out first, i guess there are some advantages being old ;)

Mine went from 150bhp (manufacturer's figure) to 230.4bhp (Jabba's after figure) which is an increase of 53.6%. Or was it an increase from 164.6bhp (Jabba's pre-remap figure for my car) to 230.4bhp - an increase of 40%? Or, if is more like 210bhp now, then the percentage power increase is either 40% (150 to 210) or 28% (164.6 to 210). Thank goodness for LV...:D

There certainly are. :D
