HID's and bulb warnings

Featured Replies

Following on from my thread about 80%/90% bulbs I am left with three questions:

- Has anybody run H& HID's in the octy II.

- Which kit did you use

- I have not searched VAG-COM yet, but if anyone has managed to turn off the bulb warnings for dipped beam only the information would be much appreciated.

Ta

I have an 8000k kit purchased from HIDS4U and they're perfect.

No dash warning lights and no need to fiddle with VAG-COM :)

I've got a 6000k kit from HIDS-Direct that was originally in my 2003 Passat, that doesn't cause bulb alarms and definitely no fiddling with VAG-COM:thumbup:

I wouldn't recommend this kit though as one of the ballasts only lasted just over a year (out of warranty dammit!) so I went and bought a pair of replacement ballasts from HIDS4U, which are a hell of a lot better

I too have a HIDS4U kit. 6000k. Had it for over a year and i run my lights constantly never skipped a beat.

I also happen to know of a 20% discount code so if you are going to buy them PM me and i'll tell you

Mater is that the one related to a certain japanese car manufacturer?

I'm assuming the HIDs4u lot are all using the ultimate kit, which if i went that way would be a 5k kit for me.

nope that gives 10%

If you PM me when your gonna buy i'll tell you the code.

I was given it as a favour by someone who used to work there. It is still valid (i just checked) and was asked not to distribute it. I don't mind passing it on to Brisky members i'm just not posting it so that it can't be found by search engines

I am currently using the Ultimate kit but am going to try the Pro Max 55w kit cos in theory if it draws 55w it shouldn't produce bulb failures :D if not they have a 28 day return policy so will send it back.

Why 8k?

Beyond 6k you loose range and end up with a blue mess that's only marginally better than halogens.

I have to say the 3k kits look pretty interesting too as slightly less light than the 4.5k kits, but an ion yellow, which would be bright and good for all weather.

Mainly for looks :o

I find the output is great and a MAHOOSIVE improvement over the standard bulbs

So what do you need to do to fit them?

Drill a hole in the rear cover, put the wire through (I assume this comes with a grommit), and then connect it all up.

I assume you then have to place the ballast somewhere. Question is where did you put it and also the kit images seem to show a second box, so what is it and where did you put that?

Thanks

You can get it all to fit inside the rear cover so no need to drill anything :)

If you get stuck PM me and i'll help but it really is straight forward

Sweet :)

Can i be cheeky and ask if you could take a pic of how it's all in, and do you have multiple boxes or just the one?

Thanks

No probs i'll take a pic later as my better half has the car at the moment.

You have 2 boxes iirc. One is the Ballast the other is the converter to fool the ECU into thinking its drawing 55w. Hence me thinking the 55w Pro Max kit might work.

Carl:thumbup:

No sooner had i posted the last post in walks my Better Half :D:D

Here are a couple of pics. 1 Showing the Cables and Ballst etc in the Housing ready to go on. I know it looks messy but couldn't get them to stay as they do when closed

Other pic shows it all contained within and closed up

Thanks for those, you're a star.

My issue now is do I actually need the kit as I could turn off the bulb warning system for the dipped beams. Probably easiest to go for the full kit.

As for the 55W kit, I'm not sure as I get a bulb warning even with the lights off, so I get the impression that electronics allow enough current through to make it think the normal wired bulb is connected.

Just spoken to HIDs4U there as they are based near me and they have changed the design of the new items.

Basically it's now a single box and smaller too :)

I'm fairly certain it's made by this company (but obviously can't confirm that 100%) and think it's now the same as the red box on this picture:

I have a 35w kit fitted with no bulb failure warnings....:-)

I have a 35w kit fitted with no bulb failure warnings....:-)

Which kit do you use?

Only the Ultimate 35w kit gives no bulb failure warning. The rest do as my mate found out. He tried the pro 35w kit and they gave the Bulb failure. The Ultimate as i have does not. As soon as he received the ultimate kit the warning stopped.

Will let you know how i get on with the 55w kit if i get it

Carl:thumbup:

Wil the 55W give much better light? Carl you gonna go for the main beam ones?

The 55w kit is supposed to give twice the light output of the 35w kit.

As for the main beams i will leave them with Nightbreakers for now. As I've said before my mate has them and yes they are good but i just can't justify the cost myself over the Nightbreakers. But eventually i may talk myself into it and have the Second Bi-Xenon MK2 vRS :D:D

Well I went up to look at the kits and the ultimate kit you have is technically no longer available. The new version isn't the one I thought it would be and has larger ballasts that don't fit under the cover. Also i looked at the ballasts for the pro+ and the new ultimate kit and they look the same and have the same part numbers on them, so who knows what is what with the new kit.

In terms of the kit, I managed to pick up an old style ultimate kit (one of the last) with 5k bulbs; however there are some issues which means that will be going back for replacement with a new kit or a refund. I'll obviously feed back on this depending on how helpful they are.

In terms of your fitting of the kit, how did you secure everything and did you get an alignment done post install?

If I do fit it, then I'd be getting an alignment done anyway, but just curious as to how much of an issue anyone had.

Once i installed the kit into the cover it just fitted in place snugly with all the wires slotted around the ballasts.

Didn't need any alignment doing i checked the lights against a wall. Marked where the bulb pattern was before. Installed kit, Checked alignment and it was exactly where it was before.

As for helpfulness. I had to send my first kit back as it just wouldn't work (faulty ballasts) whole process was about 4 day turn round and they were very very helpful.

Well I'm debating whether to just get a pack of +50% silverstars after the first kit but more on that later.

Do they actually give good distance lighting of just light up close in your experience?

Ta

They are a massive improvement see this thread Mater's Blue Bullet Xenon Upgrade

That will give you an idea to what you get. Like a mong i didnt take any before shots and have been to busy to do some comparison photo's. But im sure you will agree the light output is far better and reaches further.
