Got the chance of an RNS510 MFD3 from a 2008 Passat.

Will this be a straight swap for the MFD2 fitted to my Octavia Estate, '55 reg?

Dont want to get it then have to start changing wiring, aerials etc,

Guess it will be illuminated blue with VW logo ?

Will maxidot still work the same?

See this as best way to get round a cd changer and seperate bluetooth for phone!

Any advice welcome.

It should work fine but will have all the VW images and lighting - green for Skoda, red I think for VW (unless it's blue but you'll know that).

Yes the previous owner should have the code, and when you connect the unit just enter it and Robert's your dad' brother.

Time was when a radio just had push buttons and just needed a 12V feed , earth n aerial !!!

Hello - I have just done exactly this on my 57 plate Octy estate. Was just a straight swap. Was pretty easy to install.

1. Disconnect battery.

2. Used an old credit card to remove fascia without breaking.

3. Removed 4 screws.

4. Disconnected cables - half job done.

5. Install new unit - use inner most aerial connection - gives FM+Traffic reports (outer connection will give you FM+AM but no traffic reports)

6. Replace 4 screws.

7. Reconnect battery.

8. Power up unit - enter 4 digit code provided.

9. If all working replace facia...Job done.

Just a warning but if a car's being voluntary handed back or taken back by a lease/finance co then they will have the full spec of the supplied car, and be looking for the columbus - especially given the GPS aerial and demand it back.

Someone else here tried similar, and was busted by the finance co.
